More Speed Bumps
I thought I read sometime back about plans to remove some of the town’s speed bumps or was I dreaming?

Anyway, we had a letter last week saying how bumps were to be installed on Birchdale Rd and Lambs Lane as since Green Lane had bumps installed, people (me included) used these roads as an alternative route.

Birchdale Road incidentally was one of the roads nominated in the towns top ten worst condition roads so it doesn’t really need bumps the surface gets so pitted.

I think it really begs the question as to why they don't do what other towns do and just make all residential roads carry a 20Mph speed limit and have done with it.

Bill :)

Re: More Speed Bumps
I've not heard of any local initiatives to remove speed bumps Bill but there have been stories from other areas. You might like to read some of the points raised in the following links :

Re: More Speed Bumps
Thanks for the links John.

Yes the bumps certainly slow the traffic down that's for sure but I still think that if cars need to be slowed down then the first step should be a reduced speed limit rather than keeping the existing limit and adding the bumps.

If statistics show that 9 out of 10 people are killed at 40 while 9 out of 10 survive at 30 and the same statistics show that the majority of drivers drive just over the limit, then surly it makes sense to reduce the limits.:rolleyes

Using the same logic, if the vast majority of people dislike speed bumps then why not offer a choice to those who think the traffic outside their home is going too fast rather than only offering the hump solution?

Answering my own question I think it works out easier just to add the bloody bumps because legally, it's an easier process to add bumps than to reduce the limit.

Rant rant rant!

Bill :)

Re: More Speed Bumps
I agree Bill. If speed bumps are designed to reduce the speed of traffic from say 30 to 20 mph then it's daft to still have a 30 mph limit on the road and they should also therefore reduce the limit. In which case they could try this first which would be easier and cheaper than putting in the bumps if it works. Perhaps they don't think that speed limit signs on there own are effective (and to some extent you can't blame them) but even the bumps don't deter some people.

If we were all perfect drivers there would be no need for speed bumps, speed limits and most of the traffic signs.
