Middle Man
Middle Man

Trent walks through the automatic sliding glass door, entering the rather large skyscraper. Hiro follows close behind, watching his back and checking out their surroundings. Trent casually walks up to the main reception desk of the building, addressing the secretary sitting there, “Trent Valencia, E.S.S.,” Trent shows his badge, “we’re here to ask Mr. Ockney some questions. Could you direct us to his office?” The woman, obviously not fazed by the fact E.S.S. was in the building, says with little interest, “Fifty-fifth floor, double doors strait ahead.”

Trent and Hiro step off the elevator, seeing immediately the double doors the secretary had mentioned moments before. Trent keeps one hand on his sword, ready to unsheathe it if deemed necessary. They both walk down the seemingly quiet hall toward the doors to the office, walking side by side. Trent opens one of the doors to the office, Hiro having his back the whole time. Through the doors another secretary shows them into the office of Brian Ockney.

“What’s this all about?” Mr. Ockney says, annoyed at the interruption from his work. Trent and Hiro stay standing in front of his rather large desk, Hiro looking out the large glass window behind the businessman. “We’d like to ask you a couple of questions about SAP, Mr. Ockney,” Trent says, once again showing his badge.

Elsewhere, a man watches from the shadows of a building’s rooftop. He sets up his equipment and rests unnoticeably behind it, making sure no glare will be seen from afar. He relaxes his muscles and readies himself. Clean and silent.

“I don’t know what you’re talking about,” Mr. Ockney says, shuffling through papers, “now if you’ll excuse me, I have a lot of work to do.” Trent steps closer to the desk, a device in his hand. He presses a button on the device and a man’s voice says, “OK! OK! Mr. Ockney...B...Brian Ockney...oh god my nose...that's all I know I sw…” “Now what do you have to say, Mr. Ockney?” Trent says, smiling at the obvious nervousness the man was now showing. Just then, Mr. Ockney falls face first onto his desk, Hiro seeing a small hole break trough the glass window behind the businessman. “Dammit!” Trent immediately says, jumping for the now dead man, “he’s dead.” He looks at the bullet hole in the back of the man’s head, such a precise shot. Trent goes to say something, but then realizes Hiro had already ran out of the room.

Akujin wastes no time getting down the building and out into the streets below, his disguise working perfectly as he sees Hiro run past him. He smiles to himself, wishing he could see the kid’s face when he found his trademark black rose at the top of the building. He carries his large briefcase containing his sniper rifle past the crowd of people on the street, heading down an alleyway and down another street where his MS rests at a public hanger. He gets in and reports to Auray about his success, then flies off toward space.

When Hiro gets back to the office, he shows Trent the black rose. Trent knows exactly who left the rose, hearing about many assassinations in which a black rose had been left. He suddenly becomes aware of Vis Vires’ hand in the SAP dealings, or at least Akujin’s. After searching through Mr. Ockney’s files on his computer, Trent finds some information on “blank shipments” on the L7 colony, some forms containing shipment orders, but no information on the cargo. “This must be something, looks like we’re going to L7 next,” Trent says to Hiro as Hiro looks deeply into the black rose in which he found.
