Rusty Wallace and Brendan Gaughan also enjoyed time at the front of the field in the race that had 17 lead changes among 10 drivers.
Wallace took the lead on lap 90 during the caution period for the blown engine in Gordon’s car. He maintained the No. 1 position through lap 96 before relinquishing it to Dale Jarrett. The former Cup champion led through lap 103, before succumbing to rookie Gaughan in an on-track battle. It was the first time this season Gaughan had taken the lead under green-flag conditions.
Gaughan led for 13 laps in his Jasper Engines and Transmission Dodge, through lap 116, when the yellow flag waved for a blown engine in Jamie McMurray’s Dodge. Gaughan lost the lead when all of the lead-lap cars pitted during the caution period.
“It felt good to let ‘em know we’re really coming around,” Gaughan said after his 16th-place finish. “I’m used to running up front, and I need to get back to being used to that.
“We gained five or six spots putting tires on with a few laps to go, so I’m happy.”
