Mets vs. Yankees
I have a friend who thinks most New Yorkers have no problem with his style of fan: someone who says he's a Mets fan until they start looking bad, then following the Yankees until the end of the season because he knows that the Mets are not going to do anything. I told him he's a fairweather fan, that it's like an A's fan being a Giants fan too, or a Lakers fan also being a Clippers fan, or a Jets fan being a Giants fan also. It just doesn't seem OK, but he says that that's how everyone in New York is. Can anyone help me out, as I'm not from New York and don't believe that "real" New Yorkers would be this wishy washy about team allegience?

Re: Mets vs. Yankees
Most fans I know are pretty single minded, whichever team they choose to root for. Personally, I've known several people who claim they are fans of both teams and I can't understand that. I don't see how you can have equal allegiance to both - either you're a Met fan or a Yucks fan, not both. I just don't get it. I know I couldn't do both.

There are a lot of people who are bandwagon fans, who just get behind a team when they're doing well. For me, that's taking the easy way out. I was brought up in a household of Mets fans (except my dad, he was a Yucks fan), and they taught me that you stand by your team - and your favorite players - no matter what. That's why I use my sig line, courtesy of the Boss (the REAL Boss). As far as I'm concerened, there is no retreat and no surrender...under ANY circumstances. 8)

Re: Mets vs. Yankees
Most NYers are definitely not that variety of fan. But that said, people can do what they want. My parents both have that outlook. They root for all NY teams. Of course when it's Mets/wanks, they root for the Mets because they know if they don't I'll unplug their fridge on the quiet.
