Mets put Stanton on DL, call up Bascik
Mets put Stanton on DL, call up Bascik

NEW YORK (AP) -- The New York Mets placed left-hander Mike Stanton on the 15-day disabled list Saturday with a swollen left knee and recalled lefty Mike Bacsik from Triple-A Norfolk.

Stanton has been bothered by the knee for about two weeks and hasn't pitched since May 21 against Philadelphia. The move is retroactive to May 22 and Stanton is eligible to come off the disabled list next Friday.

``It never bothers me when I walk around. The problem has been when I go to pitch I can't push off,'' he said. ``I can't take the torque when I go to home plate. I'm a guy who uses a lot of legs. This is not something I can pitch with.''

Stanton has had his knee drained twice as well as an MRI and X-rays. He said doctors haven't been able to pinpoint the cause of the injury.

``The last time out there I thought more about my knee than getting hitters out,'' he said. ``That doesn't help anyone.''

Stanton probably will take the next day or two off before returning to the mound sometime next week. He expects to come back next weekend.

``He threw yesterday and he didn't feel as good as he did the day before,'' manager Art Howe said. ``The earliest he could have made it back was Tuesday if everything went well. So what's three more days?''

Stanton is 2-3 with a 5.03 ERA in 23 relief appearances this year.

Bacsik began spring training with a chance to make the Mets' rotation. But after giving up nine runs on four hits and five walks in three innings in a relief appearance on opening day against the Chicago Cubs, he was optioned to Norfolk.

Bacsik was 0-5 with a 6.00 ERA for the Tides. He has altered his mechanics the last three starts, moving to the third-base side of the rubber to improve his ability to throw inside to righties.

``It takes a little bit of adjustment,'' Bacsik said. ``The more bullpens I throw and the more games I pitch in the more comfortable I feel with it.''
