Welcome to the forum. I understand and share your concern about this issue even though I don't live in the imediate area. As Dave said, we went down to lend some support at the last meeting and put our feelings on this forum and the main Speak freely news page.
Click the yellow banner at the top of this page, then click news. Both the website and this fourm is available for anyone such as yourself to post openly about issues that affect the town and I would be only to happy to help your cause on this. Just let me know as much as you can and I'll put it on the main page for you.
Re: MEDICAL WASTE PLANT APPEAL
Apparently the council have backed down on their argument that this site will create gridlock or should that read more gridlock?
I say when opposing a plan, it really doesn’t make a lot of sense to focus attention on existing road problems created by our own town planners. For me the key issue here is the sighting of such a facility in a residential area and school as opposed to the outskirts of the town.
I thought the days of people living next to a factory chimney was a thing of the past and yet this is exactly what is being proposed. It’s a quality of life issue and no matter what assurances are given, there will always be worry and concern and that just isn’t right given the other location options available.
I’ve read the reports that were commissioned for Sterile Technologies and they accept that any process involving incineration of any kind will evoke public concern. It specifically recommends inner city deprived areas be targeted because statistically people from these areas are generally less likely to organize themselves in protest. Furthermore it states that deprived areas are associated with higher that average unemployment and this fact coupled with the availability of brown field sites makes their proposals attractive to towns councils.
There are very few times when I stand up and say well done WBC but the night they threw this one out was one of them. Shame they shot themselves in the foot though by targetting road traffic concerns.
