Midnight Velvet is set on a fictional island named Chilaqi. The island was once inhabited by humans, though they left over 100 years ago, driven from the island by the unpredictable weather and harsh seas. For many years the animals lived in solitude for no humans visited their lands. However it was the solitude and remoteness of the island that first drew a small group of scientists to the shores.
These scientists chose Chilaqi as the venue to carry out some important scientific experiments. Their goal was to create a formula to allow humans to shape shift. To do this, however, they came up with a plan to experiment on the islands animals. The plan was to make it possible for animals to shift into humans, then reverse the formula to work on humans. They thought this would be much safer, and reduce the risk to humans when the time came for experiments to be carried out upon them.
Things didn't go to plan. After many months of research the scientists finally discovered a formula that allowed the creatures to shift. What they had created was a virus, so powerful that within just hours it could rewrite the whole genetic makeup of the creature, granting it with the shifting ability.
But this virus had some un-predicted effects on the humans it infected. Instead of rewriting their DNA, it began to destroy it. Breaking the strands apart and resulting in death. The scientists found themselves unable to contain the virus, and with no cure in sight the team never left the island. Sadly they had been killed by their own dream, and the secrecy of the experiments meant none knew of what they had been trying to achieve.
The virus began to evolve, becoming air borne and eventually spread to all creatures living on the land. Most gained the shifting ability, though some possessed a slight genetic fault that somehow managed to stop the virus before it could totally rewrite their DNA. Those creatures became carriers of the virus, though did not gain the ability to shift.
Now once again the creatures of the island live in solitude, for any wandering human would be infected and killed before they had a chance to report to the world what they had seen. But now some of these creatures posses an ability. An ability that could change the whole course of island life.
