Lets talk Pumpkins
For the past few years, I have been trying to grow large pumpkins. I even buy the seeds that says on the package
"these pumpkins grow to 100+lbs. So far, the biggest I have grown is ten pounds. One year, the vines had blooms but no pumpkins. The space I have is only big enough to allow 4 vines. Anybody have any suggestions?

Re: Lets talk Pumpkins
Hey Thomas. Well first of all where do you live and what kind of soil do you have. Is it acidic or alkaline? Do they get full sun?
Pumpkins prefer a Ph of 7 or 8......That's sweet soil (alkaline)
Also, I have never tried to grow a huge pumpkin, but I do know that after the "fruit" sets and you have little pumpkins, you have to remove all but one(the best looking one) to give the remaining pumpkin all the nutrients. Pumpkins like nitrogen and other nutrients. When Iget a chance I'll check in my reference books and get back to you on what kind of "food" they like.....( I grow alot of different veggies and some like to be fed different).
Let me know what your soil is like. That makes a BIG difference. :) Sandy
PS: and I always pray over my veggies, that helps the most

The soil is probably acidic. I probably need to put down some lime. They do get full sun. I didn't know that I had to just leave one pumpkin. I will try that this year. And I will pray over them this year. Best idea I've heard yet. Thank you.

Yes, Thomas prayer is the key ingredient in anything :)
and yes, you will have to add lime. Get a cheap ph tester and that will help you know when it right for pumpkins....like I said they like a ph of 7-8.
This board is going to turn into crafting, gardening, Jesus talk.........cool.....all favorite subjects of mine!!!!!!!!!
Oh, yeah, I'll get bac with ya on some homemade fertilizers or you could go to jerrybaker.com. He's a master gardener, but that might take up some time....so I'll look in my book asap.

Re: Lets talk Pumpkins
:lol :lol :lol Thomas, you put a large pinch of chewing tobacco in a some cheesecloth, tie it off and submerse it in a jar of water. Don't screw the lid on tight or you will have a rocket/lid go through the roof :lol
poor 1/2 c. of that and 1/2 c of lemon dishwasing liquid in a hose end sprayer......carefully fill to top withwater and spray away.........bugs hate tobacco, lemon and the soap messes up their love life :lol

Hey Cathy......you only have to pinch all the blossoms, but one off a pumpkin plant when you are trying to acheive a record breaking size.....removing all but one or two blossoms sends all the plants energy to the blossoms left in tact. :)
