Laurel Hill Tunnel Info
Hi, it doesn't look like many use this messageboard, so I don't know if my post will be read or not ... but, here goes...

I'm doing research on the entire Laurel Hill Ridge. Since the ridge passes over the Laurel Hill Tunnel, I'd like to learn more about it. Can anyone point me in a good direction to gain some details about its construction and use? Also, does anyone know how to get in touch with a person who may have actually worked on the tunnel?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Laurel Hill Tunnel
I have recently (last summer) been to the Laurel Hill Tunnel, with permission, and a guide from the turnpike. The tunnel floor is in pretty bad shape because it had been used for salt storage. The upper parts were in better shape than I had expected, except for on the eastern end. At the eastern portal the roof of the portal building has partially collapsed. The collapse does not appear to have directly affected the tunnel itself. The tunnel was passable, and we were able to drive through it.

I would not suggest attempting to access the tunnel yourself. The upper areas are used as a bat habitat, and the bats are not to be disturbed. The tunnel, as mentioned in another post, is also used to store core samples.

If you wish to learn more about this tunnel, please contact me. I may be able to point you in the direction of some photos, and people. "southpennrailroadpennrailroad" has a CD of photos, which may include photos of this tunnel. See his website at www.southpennrailroad.com for more info.

Family
My grandfather worked on the tunnels back in the 30's. I don't know exact info and have forgotten most of what I was told about the tunnels since Grandpap died in 1979. But what I do remember, I don't mind sharing. From what I was told, tunnel construction I think started in 1937? If I'm wrong and anybody knows the right answers, let me know! They started from east to west, working on the Kit, Tusk, and Blue, then Rays Hill and Sidling and so on. They were working on Sidling in 1938 and moved to Laurel in 39. That is about all I remember if that helps you and if I'm right.
