Katrina's victims
We wish the best to our fellows down in New Orleans, and hope that they can return soon to their beautiful city. Many of my friends and collegues are in the city now trying to help, and they say that it's coming around slowly but surely.

I wonder how our friends in the Netherlands feel about this? I suspect that nation is better prepared, yet they also have much more at stake....

Re: Katrina's victims
There are many people from Louisiana taking refuge here in Southeast Texas. Most plan to return, but a surprising number of them are looking to stay here or move on, rather than return to New Orleans. The region can be rebuilt, but the economic impact will be felt for many years, if not decades. Classic example: Galveston 1900. The city was the jewel of Texas until the hurricane hit. Over 6,000 people died, and the city never fully recovered. Once a major port and industrial center, the city's largest industry is now tourism. Most of the businesses moved to Houston and Beaumont, while Galveston today has dwindled in importance to both. Could the same thing happen to New Orleans?

What sickens me is how soon the blame game has kicked off. Unfortunately, the Democrats have no option but to attempt to portray the Bush Administration as ineffective in their disaster response. If they can do so successfully, the Democrats stand a strong chance of picking up seats in 2006. (It is extremely unlikely, in any event, that either House of Congress will change hands.) Republicans will respond by pinning the responsibility on Governor Kathleen Blanco, a Democrat, for disallowing federal aid in the crucial hours immediately after the storm. I was kind of hoping both sides could hold off on the bickering until the bodies could be recovered... call me naive, but it was a pleasant thought.

For what it's worth, I live in Beaumont, which is the last regional center in Texas before you hit the Louisiana border. There were countless people preparing to deploy from here the weekend of the storm. Electrical engineers, social workers, etc. were staging out of here and Houston. This sure didn't catch our area by surprise; we had a green light to go in behind the storm with the relief effort. Our state had prepared a response almost a full week in advance. I'd object to any statement claiming the response was not in place - it was, and I saw it first-hand. If the relief didn't get there efficiently or properly, that sure warrants an independent investigation, but let's get the job done first.

I guess it doesn't do much good to blame Nature, so good thing we've always got the government to yell at!

Well, we're going to get another chance.
It seems Rita is heading for my neck of the woods. Fortunately for my family, it looks like we won't get a direct hit. Of course, this does my fellow Texans further down the coast a lot of good - I imagine things will get a little hectic down there.

Even still, we'll be evacuating tonight, it looks like, to get ahead of the rush. My grandmother lives further inland, on a hill in the country, so no chance of flooding, and it's only about 30 miles away.

(For you people up in New England, that's half a state... :rollin )

gadzooks! looks like Rita is set to match Katrina for destructive power. I gather many freeways in the soon to be afected Texas coast are now one way only - inland!

good luck to everyone down there!

as I grew up in Nova Scotia, we usually got hurricane leftovrs a couple times a year. but by then, all that is left is heavy rain and (at most) 100km/h winds - enough to blow off a few shingles here and there

Hurricane redux
Good luck, Big Dog. I read that Rita was a category 3 at landfall, so maybe not such an evil storm as Katrina. Time will tell.

Re: Hurricane redux
Yeah, well I'm here to testify that category 3 storms still pack one heck of a punch... :eek

Interestingly, I've been able to watch FOX News to see reporters such as Shepard Smith broadcasting from my own town. Kind of surreal, but cool in its own way. Of course, seeing buildings I'm familar with - only blocks from my own house - completely leveled really takes the fun out of it. I've been identifying different areas of Beaumont and comparing the different levels of destruction. A neighbor a mile away that we talked to had practically no damage, so we're hopeful we may escape relatively unscathed. We live in one of the highest areas, like a 100-yr flood zone or something, so I'm more worried about the wind than the water.

I'm staying with a family friend in a little town north of Baton Rouge, so we're able to ride out the storm in relative comfort. Rumor has it we may be able to go back to Beaumont by the middle of next week. Of course, there is no power, water, or working sewer system, so the authorities are keeping people out until the infrastructure can support a population again. No complaints here; I don't relish the idea of no flushing toilets, though I would like to see what kind of damage we sustained. I'm sure my goldfish are dead by now...

Your thoughts and prayers are appreciated.

Jeff
