Just saying Hi.
I'm Dave and I work with Darrin as an Elite Trainer at GoodLife. I'm quite proud to be associated with Darrin and it was a personal thrill to see him get the editorial position with "Inside Fitness" and to see this website get up and running. I've witnessed so many of his successful clients transformed using the intelligent diet and exercise prescriptions he's developed I know he'll emerge as a world renowned authority in the course of tiem.

Credentials
Thank you all for the welcome.

As to my interests and studies my first certification was with the International Sports Sciences Association. Darrin carries the same cert and that's what started us off on the same page. One of the assignments I elected to do with the ISSA was to design a program for golfers. In researching that project I bought a copy of Paul Chek's "Golf Biomechanics" and became addicted to Paul's total body philosophy. That has inspired me towards acquiring certification as a CHEK Practitioner and specializing in rehab and elite athleticism (they probably sound like opposite ends of the spectrum but they actually do go together). I'm on my way to that goal now having studied Scientific Core Conditioning and Nutrition and Lifestyle Coach with Paul. Along the way I've also taken the first level of Sports Strength Conditioning with Peter Twist and I plan on getting other certifications with his organization as well.

Supraspinatus & Bicep Impingement
Hi Aluschka,

Making me earn my keep right away eh? I'm hesitant to advise on rehab without actually being with you but I'll give you what I know and you can consider the logic.

When tears heal they form scars. Scar tissue usually adheres to nearby fibers and causes pain when the muscle is contracted. From personal experience massage therapy is the best way to break down adhesions. Massage therapists like to say they break down scar tissue however, in reality the scar remains but becomes more functional.

Some while ago experiments were performed on animals to find if injuries healed better if they were immobilized or if they were worked. It was discovered that low resistance, high repetition, full range of motion exercise brought about the best results. When looking at the supraspinatus this would mean lateral shoulder raises with little or no weight bringing the arm from the side all the way up over the head. Although the supraspinatus is one of the rotator cuff muscles its function in this group is more of stabilization than rotation. The other three muscles of the rotator cuff are structurally different and much more involved in rotation. The supraspinatus is the principle abductor of the arm for the first 30 degrees of abduction at which point the deltoid becomes the primary mover. The supraspinatus acts as a synergist in arm abduction throughout the full range of motion though its contribution diminishes as the arm gets higher.

Stretching also has therapeutic effect especially when the muscles are hot. For purposes of explanation I'll assume the right shoulder is the injured one. In your left hand take one end of a towel and dangle the other end behind your back. Grab the towel with the right hand as high up as you can reach and hold tight. Pull the towel up with the left hand to the limit of comfort in the right shoulder. Hold for at least a minute and repeat several times a day. Never cause pain - the limit of comfort means as far as you can comfortably go.

Some exercises you should not do until your shoulder is completely rehabed would include wide grip bench press, incline bench press, dips and upright rows. If you do choose to bench press make sure the bar comes down low on the chest and not close to the neck.

Hope this helps,

Dave
