Jane Eyre 1973 is going to be released next year..
I did some haggling. I found out that Eureka Entertainment has bought the rights to Jane Eyre 1973. I e-mailed them, they haven't announced it yet but they are planning to release it some time next year.
Hurrah! L.E.R.O has triumphed at last

It seems so sudden, I can't imagine why they have decided to go through with it, unless it has something to do with the 1983 version having just come out on DVD. I don't suppose they thought that it would compete for sales... And why not announce it, especially when so many have been harrassing them for so long?
I will not get too excited- and yet, some hope is far better than none I suppose! At least in this case.
Oh! I wonder... if they do release it, will be be in all formats or only those used in Great Britain? I'm not familiar with Eureka Entertainment.
However, I hope it gets released in Australia... our format is different again. Although we seem to follow the UK in a lot of our releases and non-releases ... for example, you can't get the 1979 BBC version of Pride & Prejudice on DVD or video here either.
Re: Jane Eyre 1973 is going to be released next year..
Wow --- that would be wonderful!
It's possible (though pricey) to have the PAL format converted to VHS; are DVDs the same everywhere?
I did write to Eureka just now - here's my note:
"Hello ---
I have a number of acquaintances who have recommended this adaptation (starring Sorcha Cusack and Michael Jayston) very highly, but it has never been released on video or DVD.
Is this a film that Eureka would consider purchasing (I assume the rights still belong to the BBC) and releasing for sale to the public?
If so, would it be possible to create a version that would work on American VHS or DVD players as well as British ones?
Many thanks for any consideration --- I look forward to a reply!"
(I decided to play a bit dumb and not write as if the release is a foregone conclusion. )

Well, it's about time!!! I have never understood why this great adaptation wasn't made available. And let's hope Eureka includes extra goodies like interviews, "making of" info, etc. on their release. I do wish your contact had been more specific, though--"next year" is too nebulous as I want to know the month & day

Ah it's too bad he won't give any details. Perhaps they haven't made any of those decisions yet.
It would be lovely to have extras and to know when and what formats etc...but I guess we shall just have to be patient. I hope they clean up the picture at the very least!

If you look at the latest post on imdb for JE '73, two people there have reported getting the same response from Eureka Entertainment!
So, it looks like this is going to happen- or else they will have a lot of angry Janians to deal with!

Hi .I am new to this board .I love Jane Eyre and have for many years .Whenever a new adaptation of mini series is made from this book I watch it and feel let down really .I saw the 1973 version mini series when I was living in Ireland as a teen and Iam still totally stuck on that version as being the best and most excellent production I have ever seen of it ..Whenever I read the book I see the characters from this mini series in my minds eye .I am thrilled beyond belief that this mini series might be available on DVD ....thanks fiona
