Jacobs Named Eastern League’s MVP
www.bmets.com/news/index....tentID=451

The Eastern League announced today that former Binghamton Mets catcher/first baseman Mike Jacobs, who’s now with the New York Mets, has been named the EL’s Most Valuable Player for the 2005 season, becoming the second player in team history to win the award.

Jacobs was thrilled to learn of his selection. “Personally, receiving the MVP award is really fulfilling,” he said when reached in New York before the Mets’ game against Philadelphia. “After coming off the injury, performing at Double-A and getting the big league call-up, this year has been a dream come true. I’m really pumped.”

Before being called up to the New York Mets August 17th, Jacobs was a key presence in the middle of the B-Mets’ order, departing with a .321 average, 25 homers, 37 doubles and 93 RBI in 117 games. The San Diego, CA native was in the middle of a 22-game hit streak upon his promotion, three games shy of the club record set by Jay Payton in 1995. The lefthanded slugger was also the first B-Met to hit 20 or more homers in a season since 2001, when Rob Stratton and Earl Snyder both accomplished the feat. Jacobs, who started at catcher for the Northern Division squad in the EL All-Star Game July 13th at Portland, ME, was named to the EL’s end-of-season All-Star team Friday. Jacobs missed most of last season with a shoulder injury.

The seventh-year pro has also made his presence felt at the big league level, homering in his first Major League at-bat August 21st vs. Washington. After a two-homer game August 24th at Arizona, Jacobs became the first player in history to homer four times within four days of his Major League debut. He’s currently hitting .310 with four homers and nine RBI in nine games with the Mets.
Payton in 1995 is the only other B-Met to take home EL MVP honors.
