Is Lentils a good source of protien? or carbs?
Hi there, I am competing in 16wks and trying to do it this time on my own, as i was not happy with my past coach. Tonight i made up a huge batch of lentil stew (spinach/bok choy/brocolli/herbs & chicken stock) i plan to eat this for Meal two and three with a salad.

Do you think that would be enuf protien/carb for those 2 meals.

And in saying that i have oats/egg whites for meal 1 and 100g of tuna or chicken with salad for meals 4 & 5. A protien drink just before bed.

Do you think this has a good level of protien and carbs? I need to drop 10kg (in 16wks) so obviously i shake the diet up again in about 6wks again, but was a little confused with the lentils and how much it contains
This is me now- (you will see my last comp picks in the photo postings)

Jamie..lentils go more towards carbs counter;) The protein is incomplete. They are still great do not get me wrong, but have small amount and add some other source of protein to that meal like chicken or fish:D I have can of lentils here and for 87 grams(beats me why this amount and not 100 grams:rolleyes ) it says 1gram fat, 11 carbs and 7 protein. It will differ from brand to brand:eek Here are two links where you can check out the macros, hope this helps;)

Aluschka is right. Anytime a food source has one major macronutrient concider it that macronutrient source. So your lentils would be a carb source (you still have to factor the protein into your diet), cottage cheese would be a protein source since it contains 2X protein to carb ratio.

As for your present diet, sounds like it is very low calorie. Mainly vegetables as a carb source is providing fiber and little starch to supply energy. Your protein sources sound fine for the most part but you are not mentioning anything about fat. Without fat (other than the little amount in the odd chicken breast) and without starchy carbs your body is going to convert the protein into glucose and you are not going to get the muscle sparing effect of your dietary protein intake.

mmmm interesting thanks guys & gals :D

Aluschka thanks for the sites hun, having a quizzy now!

Must learn all about Marconutrients....dont hear much of that word around here...

Darrin as for fats, i would add a tea spoon of oliveoil in my salads ie. Meals 3 and 4 and flaxseed oil in my brekkie. Is this enuf fats? or should i be maybe having a handful of almonds in there?:\

it probably is enough fat, I not sure of your present size but I would think 5g+ per meal (minus post workout) would be fine.

A handfull of almonds would give you way too much fat for one serving. Probably around 20g of fat in the average "palmed" portion.
