Dont look at one macronutrient, look at all of them. In order to gain mass we need to eat more (saying that I see people gain lean mass on nutrient dence lower calorie diets all the time) to be in an anabolic environment. So instead of looking at how much protein you should have just eat more all together.
A simple way to do this would be as follows. Lets say that you are eating 500 cals a day below maintenance to lose fat. On the days you workout you could eat your maintenance cals on those days. This way you would not be consuming enough to gain fat and you would have the protein sparing effects of the extra carbohydrates and fats you would also consume.
Your fat loss would slow down but still continue, and you could gain muscle at a faster rate. If you look at the before and after poster of Lori-Ann in my "client pics" you will notice that her lean mass actually increased over the 12 weeks of her diet without even going to this extent.
Make sense?
