Ground School for newbie pilots
Can we organize some sort of 'ground school' or 'brown bags' for novice pilots on the different aspects of RC Heli? Topics could include...

1) heli theory
2) how to progress from hover to FF
3) tips and tricks on setup techniques
4) just starting up... what do I need to get?
5) advanced manuvers
6) setting up radios
7) field safety and courtesy
etc...

I just think that we have a great amount of talent and this might go a long way in helping people enjoy the hobby . It will also help us to attract and cultivate new heli talent in the area. what do you guys think?

ciao,
alex--

Re: Ground School for newbie pilots
Sounds great to me. The biggest downside to helis is that newbies (like myself) crash and get discouraged after they see their investment beat itself to death on the ground, leave, and never return to the hobby! Fortunately my first crash made me even MORE determined to say "Self, I can do this. Don't give up!"

I would love to see a heli school and get some tips from ANY pilots, novice thru advanced up to expert!

I could definitely use all of the above help. I’ll chip in some beer for the teacher.

Re: Ground School for newbie pilots
If there is enough interest, I would entertain teaching a helicopter class/workshop for a small fee. Right now I am really busy with my work but I should have time in the next few weeks to put something together.

I think most people have difficulty with radio programming and control setup. Blade balancing is also something important to learn, even if you are using the high-end blades. Engine tuning, safety, building, gyro setup... the topics could be tailored to each pilot. You could bring your own heli and we could work through how to set up the servos, balance blades, flying techniques, etc., on your own machine or work on mine. How about $20 per person for a 2-3 hour class for 3-4 people on an evening or weekend?

Let me know what you think, and what you'd like to get out of a class or workshop like this... I'm not trying to get rich off of this idea, but I also don't have the time to do this for free. Of course, this is assuming that people would want to learn some of the things that I've learned! :rolleyes

Sounds good to me! Next week/weekend is bad for me (pager duty) but anytime after that's good. All the topics that you mention I’d be interested in. If one would stands out for me it would be radio programming but like I said all areas would be great.

Thanks for offering and hopeful you can get enough people interested. $20 now will save me hundreds of dollars down the road.

I would be willing to do G2 over the internet and you guys could put the radio gadget up and watch my stick movements! Dave and I have tried this and I believe that he thought it helped. G2 will allow you to send me a message and I can answer you back and do the maneuver that you want me to! Email me the night before and we can set up a flight lesson!!! This is free!!!

Copter Ground School
So far it looks like the following are interested in my offer for a helicopter ground school:

Alex P
Mark N
Tom Z

If anyone else is interested, please let me know ASAP as we're finalizing the class date soon. I'm willing to conduct a 3 hour class for $20 per person. It sounds like the best time would be late March or early April. Topics will include those listed above.

chopper school
Hi Eric, Congrats on Your appointment to the Vice Pres. of Rotorheads. I have tried unsucsesfully to access the Colorado Rotorheads web page all this week. Is it under reconstruction? I would very much like to attend Your ground school. I am not really a newbee and am well into forward flight , nevertheless there are still issues that are vague to me,engine settings and orientation problems are my big problems. It would be great to learn some more from the master!! I'll be driving up from the springs if anyone would care too catch a ride! Steve Burt sburt@coloradocollege.edu 719-574-4515

Re: You forgot me, Eric!
Oops, sorry Chris. I need your email address - and then I'll be sending you and Steve an email.

Steve - I can't access the CRH page either. I know we were changing "custodianship" of the page - maybe that's the hangup.

Ground School
Eric,

I'm the "New Guy" who e-mailed you yesterday who lives
in Trinidad, CO. I'd love to attend your groundschool.
Unfortunately I work Wednesday - Saturday. If you
could schedule the course for one of my off days please
sign me up. Sunday is my first choice since I'm in the
area.
If you need assistance in helicopter aerodynamics I'm
an FAA Certified Flight Instructor (Helicopter) and would
be pleased to help (maybe the only similarity in R/C's and
the full sized machines).

Ground School Class

I am cancelling the ground school class that was scheduled for March 23rd, as I have only heard back from one person who could attend. If I can arrange a time for at least 4 people to attend then the class will be held.

If you are available March 30th, at 1:00 pm at my house for a class, please email me. I need to know by March 25th which is the date that I will decide if there is enough interest to hold the class on the 30th.

Re: Ground School for newbie pilots
Well the March 30th class went pretty well, and all who attended said that it was helpful!

I will conduct another class if I have at least 4 interested people. So far:

Coy McGovern
Chris Offenhauser
Max Lamouria

are interested. If you are interested, please drop me an email and we'll get this class rolling.
