Garcia Traded (One step forward 3 GIANT steps back)
Duke just traded Karim Garcia to the Baltimore Orioles for 33 year old RHP Relief Pitcher Mike DeJean
For those unaware who this scrub is here are his 2004 #s:
0-5, 6.13 ERA, 1.94 WHIP, 39.2 IP, 49 H, 28 BB, .308 BAA.
For every move Duke makes thats a great trade (i.e. Weathers for Hidalgo) he makes 3 giant leaps back (this one)
Now because of this trade not only do we add a RP whos WORSE then Weathers and WORSE then Stanton and WORSE then Franco while still HAVING 2 of them on our roster, we will have to demote a undeserving young RP who deserves to be up in the majors because they have performed unlike this DeJean scrub..
sometimes this team makes no fucking sense.. what happened to the "youth" trend they wanted to do

The New York Mets today acquired righthanded pitcher Mike DeJean from the Baltimore Orioles in exchange for outfielder Karim Garcia. DeJean will join the team tomorrow.
DeJean, 33, was 0-5 with a 6.13 ERA in 37 games with the Orioles this year. In 39.2 innings, the 6-2, 219-pounder surrendered 49 hits, 29 runs, 27 earned, with 28 walks and 36 strikeouts. He has compiled a 4.05 ERA (nine earned runs in 20.0 innings) during June and July.
"Mike will bring experience and depth to our bullpen," said Mets General Manager Jim Duquette. "He has had success in the National League and has the savvy of pitching well in close games."
"I'm excited to come to New York and be in the middle of a pennant race," said DeJean. "I played for Don Baylor in Colorado and know a lot of the guys in the clubhouse. I can't wait to get there."
Last season he went 4-7 with a 4.87 ERA with 18 saves in 58 games with the Milwaukee Brewers. He was acquired by St. Louis on August 22nd and was 1-1 with a 4.00 ERA and one save in 18 contests with the Cardinals.
Mike went 3-1 with a 3.72 ERA (15 earned runs in 36.1 innings) in 33 games following the All-Star break in 2003. He was also the National League Pitcher of the Week from May 26th-June 1st, collecting four saves in 4.0 scoreless innings.
DeJean saved 27 of 30 chances, including the last 15 consecutive save opportunities in 2002 with the Brewers. Mike was 1-5 with a 3.12 ERA in 68 games that season. In 75.0 innings, he permitted 66 hits, 28 runs, 26 earned, with 39 walks and 65 strikeouts.
Mike is 24-29 with a 4.40 ERA with 52 saves in 480 major league games with the Orioles, Brewers, Cardinals and Rockies. In 538.0 innings, he's permitted 565 hits, 289 runs, 263 earned, with 255 walks and 370 strikeouts.
Garcia, 28, was hitting .234 (45-192) with seven doubles, seven home runs and 22 RBI in 62 games with the Mets this year.

This is acctually a decent trade. You can't get much for Garcia. DeJean is not the greatest, but not the worst either. Would have been better had he been a Lefty but not a bad trade at all. This guy can come in and, with the help of Peterson, he can get us some needed relief help. He'll do fairly well. I dont expect a superstar, but this guy has alot of potential. He can also be a Closer should Looper get injured. Thats my point of view atlest....

What did we lose? Karim wasn't playing anyway. At least they managed to get SOMETHING for him. They're obviously stockpiling mediocre pitching.

Re: Garcia Traded (One step forward 3 GIANT steps back)
Relax, Brian, we're not losing a young pitcher to make room for him...at least not immediately, anyway. Parra was put on the 15 day DL with a sore hip flexor, so DeJean will take his place temporarily.
Not exactly anything to write home about, but as Kev said, it's not the end of the world either. If nothing else, it's a fresh arm, which our pen could really use right about now. I'd have preferred someone better and someone who's a lefty, but how much were you going to get for Garcia?
This may also just be the first step in a larger trade, you know. When Parra is ready to come off the DL, we could turn around and use one of the pitchers as part of a deal for someone else. I'm not going to judge Duq on it until we see how everything shakes out. He's got to have more on his plate between now and the deadline.

It's a nothing trade. We gave up nothing and got back as much. No biggie. Next.

Re: Garcia Traded (One step forward 3 GIANT steps back)
easy there mj......lets not over-react to this trade. garcia was doing nothing for us now, and with richard hidalgo as our regular right fielder, garcia was going to continue to do nothing.
dejean while appearing to be a scrub has had some very good recent seasons and if you look deeper into his current season number, you will find that he in his last 6 appearances(21 days) covering 9 innings, his era is 2.00. so his numbers are on the upswing and perhaps with a littel helpful tweaking by rick peterson, dejean might become a valuable member of the bullpen.
as for the youth movement.....again, lets not over-react.....this dejean for garcia trade is not a move designed to be part of the longterm goal for the team. garcia was taking up roster space and we needed to clear it for pitching. job accomplished............to label this trade as garbage or bemoan that we arent following the "youth mevement" is in my opinion pure sour grapes.

Re: Garcia Traded (One step forward 3 GIANT steps back)
I agree, I don't consider this trade to be that big of a deal. As it was posted before, Garcia wasn't really playing anyway. And I also agree that Duke probably has more up his sleeve then this. We will just have to wait and see.
