Game Recap - 7/24/04
Good Lord, this is positively depressing. It's gotten to the point that every time we take out our starter - whether it's in the 5th inning or the 8th and whether he's struggling or not - you can almost see Art Howe raising the white flag. You simply can not expect to win games if you can't rely on your bullpen to DO THEIR FRIGGIN' JOB!!
*Al didn't help matters by hitting the 100 pitch count in the 4th inning and leaving after the 5th, but at least he left us with a lead and having given up only one run. On any other team, that would actually count for something. Unfortunately, this is the Mets. I find it hard to fault Al - I just love the guy's guts and grit, and it's hard to overlook the best ERA in the majors - but 5 inning starts, with our pen and offense, are deadly.
*Nice work by Jose again to get on base and run circles around the opposing catcher/fielders. Nice to see the Mets being a real threat on the basepaths for a change.
*David Wright continues to impress - that was one heck of a throw the length of the diamond to nab a speedy runner at first! Ladies and gents, we just may have ourselves a 3rd baseman!!
*Speaking of impressive - that was some line drive by Cliff Floyd. About time he made contact, and what contact! That was an absolute blur bast Julio Franco.
*Mike DeJean looked good in his two innings of work. Nice to know SOMEONE in the pen remembers how to pitch.
*One thing about our pen, we can certainly find a variety of ways to blow a game. Last night it was Stanton, Bottalico and Looper blowing a gasket. PLEASE, find us some relief pitching, Duq, before it's too late!
*Kudos to Kaz for threading the needle on the slide into the plate and avoiding the tag. Nifty work!
Well, that one flat out hurt. We should've had the win and we let it get away. We simply can't continue this combination of no scoring and bad relief pitching. 4 games out is too many, the skid has to stop NOW. There just isn't time to mess around anymore. Hopefully, Duq is doing his job on the trade front, but the guys on the field have to get it done too. SNAP OUT OF IT, guys!!
LET'S GO METS!!!
Like soldiers in the winter night with a vow to defend, No retreat, and baby...NO SURRENDER!!!
