Game Recap - 7/18/04
Mercy! My nerves tensed up the second Al left the game...I was so sure they were going to blow this one. Kudos all around - between the defense, the offense and the starting pitching, and at least some of the pen - they were playing some BASEBALL today. Nice to see, especially after the last two games.
*Al was, well, Al. Got off to a shaky start but then became dominant once he got his legs under him. Seaver and O'Brien actually made a great point about Al being able to get the big outs when you need them. Nice job!
*Major kudos to Mike Cameron on the defensive play of the season so far!! The shoestring catch was just brilliant and the throw to second was dead on. Nicely done.
*Some great heads up defense by Todd Zeile as well, rushing in to gobble up the ball and start a sparkling DP. Nice turn by Kaz and good job covering 1st by Al.
*More major kudos to Mike Cameron and Vance Wilson on their back-to-back homers! Woo-hoo!!
*Excellent range by Jose to get back and snare that liner over second!
*The only ugly spots on the day were Botallico loading the bases (stop arguing with the ump and just get your damn job done) and John Franco walking in a run (you're damn lucky it wasn't worse).
*Good job by Mike Stanton and Dan Wheeler to get key outs and by Loops to get the last four and close it out.
*That was a wild play at the end with Todd Zeile getting thrown out at the plate (he was definitely safe), but I can't get too down on him - I'd much prefer to see errors of comission than omission. Can't fault good old fashioned hustle.
So, a nice game all around, save a few tense moments. After the last two games, it was good to see everyone looking like they appreciated where they were and what they needed to do and getting it done. That's the kind of play we need to see. Now if only we could extend that into the Marlins series, but...as always...one step at a time. In the meantime, nice work!

I went to the game today. Camerons catch looked really nice and then his homer after that was really sweet. Vance's home run was crushed.
The crowd was really into the game. It was so cool. In the first inning, everyone was clapping and cheering Leiter on to get the strike outs. It was really exciting.
Now they just have to win against the Marlins

I think it's obvious that if Mike MUST play 1st, Vance has to get a lot more starts at C than he has been. Besides being our best defensive catcher overall, he seems to have a knack for getting hits when they matter most. Last yr at one pt. he was hitting 100pts higher with RISP.

Absolutely, dun. At a bare minimum, we've got to have Vance behind the plate and Mike at first for the Florida series. I love Bug, but if anyone should be riding the pine right now, it's him.
