Game Recap - 7/17/04
I've been seriously batting the idea around of whether I should even bother with this, but here goes...
*Glavine wasn't perfect, but he wasn't bad either. Getting no help from his offense and less than none from his defense just made his job that much harder.
*The outfield looked more like the Keystone Kops than a professional team. Yeesh.
*The infield wasn't much better - between Mike fumbling and Kaz drop kicking, it was pretty damn fugly.
*The offense was, as usual, almost entirely absent. Nice to see a home run from Mike FINALLY. Hopefully that's a sign that he's starting to come around...please God.
*The bullpen let us down big time yet again, and this time with no help whatsoever from Franco & Stanton, amazingly enough.
It was just a bad day all around and the results bore it out. But, we still have the chance to get out of this with a split, which isn't thrilling but isn't disastrous either. As we have many times up to now, we're facing decision time...men or mice. Hearing Nails up in the broadcast booth this afternoon made me nostalgic for '86...can we PLEASE make use of our resources for once and get Nails into the clubhouse to slap some sense into these guys? He was a breath of fresh air - which is just what they seem to need.
Anyway, onward and upward. Please let Al be on his game tomorrow. We need this win!!!

Definately a disappointing last two days. Sigh. The team certainly doesn't look like a team that is trying to be in contention. BUT all hope is not up yet. I agree with Catcherlady and will hope that Leiter is on his game tomorrow and they could come away with a split. The Mets need this win. I will continue to think positive.

I don't usually buy into "must win" labels put on games, especially with nearly half a season to go, but this one comes very close. Big difference to the team's psyche being 2 out as opposed to 4.

especially when these games are being played at home........and that we won the first game of the series to actually pull within 1 game.

Ok, we didn't gain ground, but we didn't lose it either. The team's hanging in there, right in the thick of the fight. That's not disasterous. Pretty impressive actually. Certainly more than I expected from them.

Me too, dun. I expected them to be a .500 team, but I figured that would give them a shot at third place, if anything. I never dreamed we'd have a genuine shot at first - especially this far into the season.
There's no guarantee we'll make good on it, of course, but it sure is nice for the games to be FUN again. After the last couple of years, we deserve at least that much.
