Injury shouldn't make him miss any games, Sherman says

Green Bay - Green Bay Packers quarterback Brett Favre has a hairline fracture of his right thumb just below the fingernail, but coach Mike Sherman said Favre was confident he could play with the injury.
The Packers don't play again until Nov. 2 because they have a bye this weekend and Favre will not take part in the three practices scheduled this week. Sherman said Favre would have his thumb placed in a splint for the time being.
"He won't do anything this week and we'll further evaluate it on Monday," Sherman said.
Favre thought he hurt the thumb on the first series of the game when he followed through on a pass and hit one of his lineman's shoulder pads. He did not come out of the game and continued to play effectively in the Packers' 34-24 loss to the St. Louis Rams at the Edward Jones Dome.
"He played a heck of a game with it," Sherman said. "If we had to play this week, he said he could play with it. Hopefully, in two weeks it will be better. But he played pretty well with it the other day."
After the game, Favre experienced some swelling that caused the medical staff to take X-rays. A hairline fracture of the bone was discovered just below the fingernail on his thumb.
Favre suffered a bruised thumb in a 1999 exhibition game against Denver at Camp Randall Stadium and then aggravated it badly in the season-opener against Oakland when he struck defensive tackle Russell Maryland's helmet.
He did not miss a game during the '99 season, but his play was adversely affected. Though he led the team to three dramatic comebacks early in the season, his accuracy wasn't the same and his completion percentage dropped considerably from his career mark.
"I asked him how does it compare to '99 and he said not even close," Sherman said of the latest injury. "He said (of '99), 'I couldn't grip a ball.' It's nothing like that, it's nothing like the (elbow) tendinitis (in 2000).
"He feels pretty confident he can throw the football the way it is right now."
Sherman said he hasn't been given any indication the injury will get worse if Favre attempts to play with it in two weeks.
"That was my number one question," he said. "Is there a chance we could be risking something here? If that's the case, he would not play. That's not the case at this present time."
