Favorite Places to Hear Music
Do you have a favorite hangout where you like to hear music? I hope we get some varied responses here...
My all-time favorite place to go to hear some good tunes was a hole in the wall dive bar called The Butterfield Stop. This was back when I was stationed in Ft. Bliss, TX (El Paso) 95-97. The paint was peeling on the walls, the pool sticks were all warped, and some pretty shady characters hung out there - worst of all, the bathrooms were atrocious. But man, oh man the bands that played there! They were all just thrown together garage bands, but they all played the kind of music you just don't hear on the radio (and likely never did) anymore. You could get really close to the band, talk to them on their breaks... it was fun! And I'm sure these everyday guys felt like celebrities. Ohh, so many fun memories from that place - I still laugh out loud when I think of some of the things our bunch from the ER used to do...
Other than Butterfield's, I used to love, love, love going to clubs and dancing. (Still would if a CERTAIN PERSONwould TAKE me once in awhile.... dear...) Yes, yes, I was the Dancing Queen. There was another place in EL Paso called The Basement - it was one of those 3 clubs in 1 type joints. On the top floor was the 80's bar - they played great music from the 80s (duh). Stuff by The Cure and Souxie and the Banshees and Duran Duran etc. On the bottom floor was the Techno/Modern dance room divided by a glass wall & door from the Lava Lounge with - you guessed it DISCO!!!! YES!!!!! aaaahhhhhhFREAK OUT! le freak, chez chic she's a BRICK....HOUSE
In Pittsburgh, there are tons of places to go do that kind of thing, but, alas, I was too young when I lived here before and now I'm married, with a little one... which is great, but I do wish I could have done some more exploring downtown. Saundra probably knows about a place called Nick's Fat City - I've always wanted to go the to hear The Clarks play... Jason, honey... maybe sometime??? When we get caught up on the bills? Pweese?
...*sigh - the good old days....

Ohhh, I almost forgot! I knew there was another place I wanted to mention. Anyone ever heard of Chelsea's Street Pub? It's more like a restaurant by day, but on weekend nights they usually have live bands.
Anyone else here like Kareoke?

I will mention a few places that probably only Traumaddict will know and some she won't know because they were before her time. Most concerts that are not classical music I heard at the Civic Arena or Three Rivers Stadium. Classical is best at Heinz Hall. But I think we always remember the places of our youth and that was the Craig Street Inn......a bar near the University that had some live music but mostly relyed on recorded music. It was a place where you knew everyone by sight at least and you always heard the same music which got to be like the theme of the place. I probably couldn't take the noise and smoke anymore but I sure miss the place. It has turned into an upscale lunch and dinner palce with a fancy name but sometimes I just go back to remember how great it was and how we all lined up to get in there for the comradery and the music and the beer.

:::Sand cringes at the mention of 'Duran Duran' and disco:::
There was a 'punk rock' venue here back in the late 70s called "Zwines" that was pretty er...basic. It was down the end of a long trail of dark alleys. The bands that were regulars there had names like 'The Atrocities', 'The Suburban Reptiles', 'The Scavengers' and 'The Terrorways.' All clean cut young men and women from the local finishing school The venue predated the 'water bottle era' by 15 years as the only refreshments available was cold water from a tap!
In general I'm not a 'club' person. Too much noise and cigarette smoke. I'd rather go to a live concert (for the sole purposen of getting into the music) or a fairly quiet cafe where you can hold a decent conversation without having to shout. Best of all, a gethering outside under the sun or the stars. That's more my idea.
