Family Affair
It was my eighth birthday. I was so proud. I was on my way to secondary school and doing big kid stuff. That's when you attend your first Bidi Dance. I was finally old enough to have a boyfriend. Well as long as Mahda and Pahda approved. It seemed that no one was good enough to be betrothed to me. Mahda and Pahda threw me a great birthday party. My friends from school were ther too. Mahda had bought me a big, glittery tiara to wear while I sat at the head of the table. I got my first taste of sirdura. It wasn't full strength because Pahda mixed it with sun fruit juice. It was delicious. Everyone had a wonderful time at the party. Even little baby Lsa. The day had gone perfect in my opinion. After all of the guests went home and Mahda went to put the baby to bed and go to bed herself, Pahda called me to his office. He said he wanted to show me something. I figured it was something about animals since he's a zoologist. Boy was I wrong.

Family Affair
When I walked in Pahda was standing by his desk. I looked around the room to see if I could spot what he wanted to show me. There were a pair of Lollee's in a large cage on the right side on the room. But, they had been here for a while, so they weren't it.
{Did you have a good time today?} Pahda asked me.
I nodded and walked over to give him a hug.
{What did you want to show me?}
{You are becoming such a lovely young woman, Mira.} he said with a smile as he brushed his finger through my short hair.
{I have a special present for you. I'm going to show you how to be a big girl.} he contined as he stroked my check.
Something felt different. Something was wrong. What was going on?

When my pahda finally showed my how to 'be a big girl' I was so shocked by his actions I couldn't even speak. I was confused and scared all at once. As far as I knew pahdas weren't supposed to do those things with their daughters. It felt all wrong. But pahda wouldn't do anything to hurt me, right? Hazo told me from now on this would be our little secret game for just the two of us. He gave me a hug and kiss and sent me off to bed. It took me a while to fall asleep. I felt weird. I also felt kind of guilty like I did something wrong. But that couldn't be right. I did what I was told. A daughter's supposed to obey her pahda, right? I did just that. So why did I feel so awful?
Our 'little secret' continued for months. I wanted to tell Mahda, but Pahda said that she wouldn't understand so it was best not to tell her. Sometimes he would visit me at night. It was so confused by all this. Part of me kind of liked the attention and another part felt like it was totally wrong. The stress started to affect my physical health. My hair started to get thinner and break off a lot in my brush. Mahda got worried and decided to take me to the doctor.

When I got to the doctor, he was asking my mahda all sorts of questions about my diet and such. From what Mahda told him, I was eating right. Then he asked about stress.
{I don't know of anything causing her serious stress. Mira, is there anything that's been bothering you lately?} I shook my head no. {Are you sure, honey? Nothing at school or with your friends?}
{No Mahda.} The doctor recommended a dermatologist and that was pretty much the end of that.

I didn't like keeping Mahda in the dark about what was going on. But Pahda said if I was a good girl I wouldn't tell. I certainly didn't want anyone thinking I was a bad girl. Yet I felt I had to tell somebody. So I would sit my baby sister on my lap and whisper my secret to her. I knew she couldn't talk so I knew she wouldn't be able to tell anybody what I said.
I got to watch Lsa a lot. Mahda wasa furniture maker and she was busy a lot. Sometimes Pahda would go away to different zoos around the world helping them prepare habitats for different animals. He helped transport some chichus from Hnn country and prepare a habitat for them in the Fountain Hill Zoo. He told me one day he was going to take me around the world to see all the different exotic places.
Mahda eventually found out about what Pahda was doing. For some reason she didn't do anything about it. I didn't understand that at all. When I asker her about that she told me to speak of this to no one. Being the good girl I was, I obeyed. Edited by: Detia1 at: 1/4/02 5:42:38 pm

No one. I told no one. I couldn't even tell Lsa about what I was going through anymore. She was just starting to talk. I was so troubled I didn't want to see my friends anymore. How could I be with them and have a good time with each other when I was so burdened. I was alone now.

Things started to get worse and worse at home. I could tell Mahda was unhappy. She would take it out on Lsa. I started doing really bad at school. I didn't care about things much anymore. So, my parents decided to pull me out of public school and teach me at home. Pahda was a professor so he did most of the teaching. He would have my lessons in his office. He would lock the door and tell the others not to disturb us. He used my lesson time as another opportunity to violate me. So far it was only touching. However, when I had my second growth spurt he took things further.

Hazo had started coming into my room into the middle of the night. He would craw into bed with me, do what he wanted, then leave. I thought I could stop his visits by locking my bedroom door before I went to bed. It was useless for me to do that bacause he would unlock the door with the key. That made him upset that I did that. He told me not to ever do that again. He didn't get loud with me, not did he say it in a nasty voice. He just looked me dead in the eye and said it with a cold firmness. That didn't stop me from feeling scared.
S time passed I had become very introverted. I had gotten to a point where I had lost the few freinds I did have. I wished I could talk to my sister, but she acted like she didn't like me for some reason. The closest thing I had to a freind was a beautiful doll Pahda had bought me for my fifteenth birthday. I named her Nya. She was my only friend.

Everyday I would talk to Nya. I would tell her what I was feeling. Tell her things I never told anyone else. Sometimes I would hold her close and cry and cry until she was soaked with tears. One day as I was crying something very surprising happened. Nya spoke to me for the first time.
{Why are you crying, Mira?}
{Be..because my Pahda does things to me that hurt me, and I want him to stop.}
{I can help you if you want. I'm your friend.}
Nya turned out to be the only friend I had. As time passed, I notice Hazo was paying less and less attention to me and more attention to Lsa. One day he was watching her play in the yard. I was sitting next to him on the proch. Lsa was about seven at the time. He started to talk to me about her.

Lsa was kicking a ball around. She was such a tomboy. I wished we could be friends. I could put her hair up in the niku style. I'd let her do my makeup because my hair was so short. acctually I would care if she only said hello to me.
{She getting quite beautiful.} I heard Hazo say.
{Yeah, I remember when she was a baby.} I muttered. I wanted to add 'That was when everything was perfect.'
{Soon she'll be eight.} Hazo contiued.
{Mira, don't you see? He's going to hurt your sister too!} I them heard Nya say.

As it got closer and closer to Lsa's eighth birthday, Hazo started to spend more and more time with and around Lsa. That scared me for her. I figured Nya was right. He was going to show her how to 'be a big girl' like he showed me. I had to do something. Nya told me she had a plan.

{Okay.} I said as we got up from my bed.
When we got out to the balcony I saw Lsa. She had jar with her.
{She's coming up here tonight.} Nya remarked.
{Why?} I asked quietly so Lsa wouldn't hear.
{Lsa colloecting bugs to put in your bed because she's jealous of you. Don't be angry with her she dosn't know.}
{I understand, Nya.}
{We'll show her, warn your sister. Leave the blacony door unlocked to night.}
I nodded looking at the cloor of the sky. It was just starting to change into night.

Soon, I heard Hazo come into my room as I was facing the balcony. I turned to see him standing in front of the door with an expression of pure lust in his eyes. He quietly walked up to me and took my face in his hands.
{Mira,} he whispered, {I see you wore the new dress I bought you. You look so lovely.} He then stood behind me, put his arms around me and began to kiss me behind my ear. Eventually he told me to remove my clothes and go to the bed. As this was all happening I could feel my mind go kind of numb. It always did that when I was with Hazo. I knew what he was doing to me, but I tried not to think about it. While he was on top of me I heard Nya call my name. When I turned my head to the left I saw my sister looking in the balcony door. The next thing I knew, she was gone. Minutes later I heard someone rushing up the steps. I heard Kalia yell something. Then I heard someone bumping around in Lsa's room. Someone ran down the steps. The last thing I heard was a motor bike starting and Kalia yelling about something. Right then, Hazo released himself inside me. He let out a soft sigh, kissed my cheek, then left. I just laid there for a while in silence.

Lsa ran away the day before her eighth birthday. Hazo was extremely upset about that. He even called the police to see if they could help find her. Weekss passed and not a trace of her could be found. I missed my sister, but I knew wherever she went was better than where I was. About a month and a half after Lsa ran away I started to feel sick. I was getting these horrible headaches in the morning and having trouble waking up. A couple times i even slept past noon. When I missed my cycle for a whole month, I pretty muched figured out what had happened. Hazo had gotten me pregnant.
My parent came to an agreement to keep me in seclusion until the baby was born. I had no idea what plans they had after that.

As the months passed I experienced dramatic changes in my body. My paretns never took me to the doctor. I guess they were afraid she would ask too many questions. Just about everyone in the neighborhood knew I didn't date so I knew they would wonder who could have gotten me pregnant. Kalia was there when the baby was born. I knew right away something was wrong when Kalia laid the baby in my arms. She wasn't the right color and she wasn't moving or making any noise. It didn't take long for us to realize that the baby was born dead. When Kalia tried to take the baby's body from me, I wouldn't let her.
{Please, Mahda! I want to hold her for just a little while.} I named her Masau (sorrow). Soon, Hazo returned. After kalia told him what happened, he took the baby from me.
{Where are you taking her?} I asked.
{She needs to be laid to rest.}
Later on I found out they had buried her in the woods somewhere behind the house.

I was so upset about my baby I didn't talk or eat for days. I couldn't understand why these things were happening to me.
{Nya, I don't want to be here anymore.}
{Well, why don't you go where your sister is?}
{But I don't know where she is.}
{I can help you find her.}
Hearing that, I grabbed Nya up and headed to the front door. Hazo saw me and asked me where I was going.
{I'm going to look for Lsa. I want to find my sister.}
{And you're just going to run off without knowing where to start? That reminds me. I meant to tell you a woman called us about her. She says she knows Lsa and is looking for her too. Her name is Lady Dani Meglouse. She wants to meet with us tomorrow.}
For about six cycles we worked together with Lady Dani to search for Lsa. We utilized the media to let people know in Todine City and Fountain Hill that we were looking for her. We finally go a break through one night when Lady Dani called us and told us she had found Lsa. She said she was in the hosptial and that she was badly injured.
When we arrived at the hospital, we joined Lady Dani in Lsa's room. She was unconcious for quite some time. dani told us that she had been shot. She didn't know who shot her though. I was so happy when Lsa finally woke up. She didn't seem happy to see us there though.

Lsa started screaming at us and telling us to get out. She acted like she wanted nothing to do with us. I could understand why she would be angry at our paretns, but why was she angry with me? Lsa made such a disturbance that Hazo decided it was best that we leave. I was so upset. I hadn't seen my sister in seven cycles and I couldn't even hug her and tell her I loved her. I felt terrible. I thought things couldn't get any worse. I was wrong. After we returned homw, Hazo began to treat me worse that before. During his night visitations, he took things further. He started tying me up to the bed posts. He would also perform painful sexual acts on me. He would gag me so no one could hear my cries of pain. I knew I had to stop him from hurting me, and fast. One evening while we were eating dinner, Nya gave me an idea.

Not for a second did I think it was a horrible idea. Nya was right, if I could take away Hazo's hands I'd be safe. I quickly thought of how to do it. I had just finished my slice of niku roast, so I acted like I was going to get another one. I took hold of the carving knife and glanced over at Hazo. It look like he was think about seconds. Both his hands were on the table and his left hand was on my side-- It would go first. Just as he was raising his hand I struck, jabbing the carving knife as deeply as I could into the hand.

For a few seconds, Hazo looked down at his hand in shock. He couldn't move it because the knife had it pinned to the table. Then he started screaming.
{Mira! What are you doing!?} Kalia screamed. She quickly wnet over to Hazo and pulled the knife out of his hand. She then called an ambulance while trying to stop the bleeding. A neighbor must have heard the screams because the police showed up along with the ambulance.

When the police questioned me, they asked me why I did what I did.

{Who is Nya?}
I held Nya up for them to see. The police determined that I was mentally unstable. In the end, I didn't end up going to jail, but where they sent me was close enough. I was sent toe Yellow Pond Mental Hospital for treatment.
