EATING WHEN FEELING ILL
Hi all

I'm not feeling too good at moment. I've been a bit low for last 6 weeks as I've fractured the bottom bone in my spine, but as i've been low I think my immune systems gone to pot as I've now got a kidney infection.

My kidneys are aching so much and i feel constantly sick because of the pain.

I usually do a keto diet, but I haven't eaten for 2 days now. The only thing I fancy eating is wholemeal toast.

Do you think I should just eat what I can and forget the keto thing until i'm better?

Also, any idea if keto diets can adversley affect the kidneys??

Re: EATING WHEN FEELING ILL
Hey Gail, yes...stop the keto until your kidneys are better--The article below will give you some more info but in summary...if u are consuming lots of protein and your kidneys are infected your body can't get rid of the waste products from protein metabolism and in turn can cause problems-gout, joint pain, weakened immune system, delayed healing etc. You need your body to be healthy--a keto diet won't nessessarly affect kidney function in healthy adults (as long as your eating the right portions of protein and not too much) but if the kidneys aren't healthy--eating a balanced diet--protein-carbs-essential fat-- is the way to go:) :) :) Drink lots and lots or water, take cranberry caspsules and drink green tea throughout the day. These are only reccommendations--always check in with your doc if you are experiencing pain--meds may be the way to clear up the infection...
Hope you feel better soon, and EAT--Not eating when feeling ill is the worst thing you can do to your body--your body needs the nutrients to help heal itself:)

ARTICLE:

"High-protein diets are generally well tolerated by healthy adults. But a dramatic increase in protein-rich foods may be dangerous for people with liver or kidney disease because they lack the ability to get rid of the waste products of protein metabolism.

Protein is essential to human life. Every cell in your body contains protein. Protein is found in your bones, muscles, skin, organs, blood, hormones and enzymes.

Your body can't store excess protein. During digestion and metabolism, protein is broken down into amino acids — the building blocks of protein. Your body uses these amino acids to make enzymes and other proteins. But any "extra" amino acids are stripped of nitrogen, and the nitrogen is eventually excreted by your kidneys and liver. The non-nitrogen parts of amino acids are used for energy or converted into fat.

Although high-protein diets generally aren't harmful, they may increase the risk of kidney stones and osteoporosis. High-protein diets may also limit other healthy foods such as fruits and vegetables. In addition, many high-protein foods — such as meat, milk, cheese and eggs — are also high in fat and cholesterol. So choose your protein sources wisely. Good choices include fish, beans, lentils and low-fat dairy products.

If you have kidney or liver disease or any chronic health condition, talk to your doctor before starting a new diet."

Re: thanks LA
Hey Gail..gety betta soon chick;) I feel for you Hon...I used to suffer from bladder infections in the past:x ...phew not anymore:p I am not sure if Kidney and bladder infection are in same pain category? LA gave you all the neccesary tips:D Just keep drinking as much as you can....warm liquids such a harbal tea would be great too. Caffein is out since it stimulates kidney and dehydration follows, not what you want.Keep warm and rest a much as you can. Have some nice smoothies with whey ,berries and yogurt if you can handle it...you get some easily digestible protein(kinder on your system) plenty of antioxidants from berries and some healthy bacteria from yogurt;)

Thanks for your well wishes LA.

Yours too Aluschka,

Sickness has set in now, so I unfortunately can't eat as I can't keep anything down, sure I'll get better soon.

My other half was all panicky when he got home from work as i'm all puffy and yellowish and he was certain my kidneys were failing!!! He tends to over-react!

Trying to keep fluids up but thats proving difficult due to nausea.

Damned illness!
Hi aluschka

Yep, i've been pretty bad. Admitted to hospital on thursday afternoon as my kidneys were'nt functioning well at all. I was drinking but not passing water, got all puffy and yellow and very very dehydrated which was weird cus I was drinking loads!!

I'm back home now, taking a couple of days off work until i'm up to speed.

Managed to eat some oats this morning and keep them down so perhaps i'm getting better at last!
