Dmitri vs. Razel
Dmitri vs. Razel

As the two entered the courtyard, side by side, their faces stiffened. At the same moment they both got that same feeling of nostalgia, remembering each of their duels held in this very same place. They were as much friends as rivals, each trying to prove himself to the other for a matter of pride and dominance. They faced each other mere feet from toe to toe, their eyes starring forward toward their opponent. Like a synchronized action both Razel and Dmitri reach for the hilt of their sword, unsheathing and attacking in one swift movement. Dmitri quickly took the offensive, his attacks flowing without flaw. Each swipe of his sword seamlessly went into another, not a beat missed. Razel’s defense was as equally flowing, deflecting everything Dmitri had to throw at him. Their swords clanged together viciously and almost in a rhythmic pattern. For at least five minutes strait Dmitri attacked without pause, as Razel defended himself perfectly. Razel couldn’t see any openings in Dmitri’s advance, and he was beginning to wonder if he ever would. Just then a quick flash of light from the sun bounced off of Razel’s sword, luckily blinding Dmitri just long enough for an opening for attack. Razel took his chance, horizontally slashing his sword at Dmitri as his defenses were weakened. Dmitri also saw the light before it hit his eyes, giving him plenty of time to jump back far enough to get away from Razel’s advance.

They both stood there, Razel catching his breath and Dmitri standing there stone-faced. Seeing Razel breath heavily, Dmitri grinned. “You should quit smoking. Those things’ll kill ya,” Dmitri said, the grin still showing. Razel ignored the comment, completely focused on Dmitri’s actions and not words.
He’s grinning, Razel thought to himself in horror, that’s never good.
Razel’s face was now stone, his concentration fixed on Dmitri and every move he made. Razel took one last deep breath and leveled his breathing to normal, getting into his usual stance. Dmitri cleared his throat, his grin disappearing from his face and leaving Dmitri’s usual blank look of neutralism. Dmitri made the first move again, this time as he attacked he hummed Korobeiniki, an old Russian folk song. Razel couldn’t remember where he’d heard it before, but he knew he had somewhere.

As if it had never been interrupted, their fight went on exactly how it started. Dmitri attacked with a quickness, his attacks seamless and precise. Razel’s defense was impenetrable, his parries and blocks stopping Dmitri in his tracks. But Dmitri continued to attack, not allowing Razel to ever have a long enough opening to attack. Both duelists held their swords tight as they clashed their weapons together back and forth, a slash here, a parry there, each of their separate flows bleeding into each other until they both followed the same pattern. Razel’s eye twitched as he noticed the pattern.
Hope Dmitri hasn’t caught on, or this will be bad, he thought, staying with the rhythm of his own defense.
Razel took his only chance, an opening in the pattern where it all starts over again. Dmitri paused for just a second, just then catching the pattern. Razel swung his blade toward Dmitri’s neck, stopping mere centimeters from one of Dmitri’s largest arteries. Razel then smiled, “gotcha.” As the words left his mouth he noticed Dmitri was grinning again and suddenly he could feel the blade very slightly pressed against his neck as well. They each had their sword to their opponent’s neck, and they both smiled at each other just staring for a while. Then, something unspoken, something they could see in each other’s eyes told them to release. And they did, at the same time removing their blade form the other’s neck. They both sheathed their swords, Dmitri’s grin long gone. Razel walked over to Dmitri, his hand outstretched with a big smile on his face, “draw.”
