Difference between Met fans and Skankee fans
The Out-of-Towner by Rick Reilly
The wife and I moved our family to New York City for the fall so we could experience firsthand the thrill of rude cashiers, cabs that smell like a goat fry and the $19 tuna sandwich.
So we've had a front-row seat to the tension in Gotham lately, with elbows flying in grocery lines, mothers slamming their strollers into each other and half the populace screaming at the other half. And that was before the Subway Series.
Folks in the rest of the country see this World Series as the government versus Microsoft. They don't care who wins as long as a whole lot of New Yorkers suffer. But having studied the Mets' and the Yankees' fans, it seems to me there are some basic differences.
For instance, I've noticed that Mets fans occasionally take the peanuts out of the shell before eating them. In addition, many of them are from families who've been walking erect for two or more generations.
Mets fans are a paper-napkin kind of crowd. Yankees fans prefer their shirts, in the rare event they're wearing them.
Mets fans worship their heroes so devoutly that Mets players find it difficult to leave the house. Yankees fans worship players whose prior felonies make it illegal for them to leave the house.
There haven't been many, but Mets fans take great pride in each and every pennant their team has won. Yankees fans take great pride in each and every pennant their team has bought.
Mets fans enjoy the everyday food of the city -- a delicious hot dog from Gray's Papaya, maybe an egg cream or a street-corner knish. Yankees fans like beer.
Mets fans worship an odd mascot with an XXL head known as Mr. Met. Yankees fans worship an odd mascot with an XXL head known as Mayor Giuliani.
In big games Mets fans pray for another home run off the bat of 32-year-old legend Mike Piazza. In big games Yankees fans pray for another home run off the glove of 12-year-old legend Jeffrey Maier.
After wins at Shea Stadium, Mets fans love to celebrate to the beat of Who Let the Dogs Out. Yankees fans make visitors ask the same question. In fact, Mets reliever John Franco wouldn't let his eight-year-old son, J.J., wear his jersey to Game 1 at Yankee Stadium for fear it would cause trouble. But Yankees fans don't mind jerseys. It's Mets hats that they steal off heads and set on fire.
Mets fans root for outfielder Benny Agbayani, who once tossed a live ball into the stands. Yankees fans root for infielder Chuck Knoblauch, who once tossed a live ball to first base.
The hardest three-year stretch for most Mets fans was from 1977 to '79. The hardest three-year stretch for most Yankees fans was third grade.
A good question to ask Mets fans is, "Do you think manager Bobby Valentine will be back next year, or will he leave for more money?" A good question to ask a Yankees fan is, "Is this the stop for Yankee Stadium, or should I go screw myself?"
Put it this way: Mets fans are diehards, Yankees fans throw DieHards.
Mets fans take advantage of New York's unsurpassed array of cultural treasures, including art museums, opera houses and Broadway theaters. Yankees fans like beer.
At Shea Stadium, Mets fans get used to the wind blowing in from leftfield. At Yankee Stadium, Yankees fans get used to the wind blowing out from the owners' box.
Mets fans seem to be ethnically diverse, with a fan base that includes African-Americans, Asians and Eastern Europeans. Yankees fans have also gotten used to sitting behind poles.
Mets fans use their cell phones during games. Yankees fans use the phones in their cells.
The language of Mets fans can be a little coarse, sprinkling the occasional f word into conversation. The language of Yankees fans can be a little coarse, too, sprinkling occasional conversations in with the f words.
All in all, I'd say Mets fans seem to relish the honor of winning after years of sweat; of standing by their team because it's their team, through feast and famine; of wearing their old, frayed Mets hats past all the bandwagons and Senate candidates in the crisp new hats of the easy team to root for, the soulless one, the corporate one.

Hatin' on the Yanks and their fans is almost too easy. Almost... ah hell Yankee-hate is the hate that just keeps on giving. Every few days they do something that justifies it all over again

Re: Difference between Met fans and Skankee fans
You wanna know the differance mets fans hate the yankees. Most yankee fans if its the mets playing againsst someone theyll root for the mets. If there playing against each other obviously theyll root for the yankess. But in the owrld series a mets fan would root for the other team. They will never root for the yankees
Re: Difference between Met fans and Skankee fans
why would any right minded mets fan root for the yankees?? or for that matter, why would any right minded human being root for the yankees??
Re: Difference between Met fans and Skankee fans
Yankee fans can't grasp the concept that fans might actually be watching, because they love Baseball. Then again, they can't grasp the concept of fans who continue to support their team when they aren't in first place either. To them, putting down the team is a way of putting down the fans, which is arse backward. How exactly does saying "1918," make Red Sox fans look bad? I guess about as much as saying "26," makes Yankee fans look good.
As if Sox fans are the reason for their team not winning, but Yankee fans are the ones who really win the titles for their team. Funny, last I checked, being a fan had nothing to do with jumping on a bandwagon. Maybe that's why 1/2 of them can't name the SS before Jeter, and it wasn't Mickey Mantle!
For all the talk about Yankee fans being better, it took them nearly 100 years, to do something the Mets managed in only 25. It was the Mets who were the first NY team to draw three million fans in a season, not the legendary Yankees. For all their success and tittles, you'd think they would've done that many times over? Yet they didn't even do it when they were the only game in town!
Whether they want to admit it or not, NY is an NL town. And it always will be too. I have more respect for people like my parents, than anyone. Think about how spoiled we are, and then think about trying to go five years with no NL team! God bless those who stayed strong, and refused to jump over to the dark side!
As for Gulliani, the man did a hell of a job with 9/11. He's the reason why the Mets have the fourth oldest park in the majors now (Yankee Stadium renovation included, Shea's never even been renovated) though. He was so far up the Yankees arses, he had that model of the new Shea on his desk for years. I think he thought it was a paper-weight. Then last year he was made aware that the Mets have a provision in their lease, where they have to get a new park before the Yankees. Because of that, he had to cater to the Yankees at the same time, or else risk George getting mad at him!
Re: Difference between Met fans and Skankee fans
I have to agree with everything that has been said. Yankee fans are the only people that make me more mad than George Steinbrenner himself. A perfect example of their stupidity would be this:
In 2000, I got tickets to a subway series game during the regular season. I went with hopes that I wouldn't be surrounded by drunks (which went unfulfilled, considering that drunk would describe every Yankee fan in the ballpark). In the second inning, Mike Piazza came to bat against Roger Clemens ( ), which was supposed to be the matchup of the day, considering that Piazza had previously owned Clemens. As I assume you have guessed by now, Piazza was hit in the head by a fastball, knocking him close to unconscious. As if this wasn't bad enough, the Yankee fans throughout the stadium began chanting, "Stand him up and hit 'em again!" This apalled me more than I had ever thought possible. That was the event that really kicked off my deep hatred for the Yankees. -- A true story from the memory of RogerOThornhill
Re: Difference between Met fans and Skankee fans
There's defenitely a dam good reason why beer sales were cut off in the bleachers. Even my friends who are Yankee fans talk about what a freak show they are. One of them went to a game against the Sox a few years back, sat in the bleachers, and watched the goons physically harass a Red Sox fan, and his 10 year old son. They literally ripped the jerseys off of both of them! I think I feel sorry for them more than I hate them. Anyone who would rip a jersey off of a 10 year olds back, just because they were rooting for the other team, obviously has much larger issues.
The funniest thing ever done at Shea, was at a Met-Yankee game in '99. Of all the coincedences in the world, Piazza just happened to luck out, and drill a three run HR off of Clemens in that game. In the first inning though, a bunch of moronic Yankee fans, tried to do their stupid role call thing. I was in the upper crust of the nosebleeds, and they were all in the front section of the upper deck. I didn't complain about the seats, and that might have been the best game to have them for. We had a nice little downhill slope, which made it easy for all of us to show these losers, you just don't do that in the other team's house. If it takes a million crushed cups upside their heads to realize that, so be it.
Then to cap it off, most all of them had left the game by the eigth inning. No point in showing any loyalty I guess, since the Mets were up by an insurmountable score, of 5-2. I'll always remember Paul O'Neill being thrown out trying to steal third. Of course he did his usual spoiled kid routine, which was a pleasure to mimic, for the enjoyement of all.

Re: Difference between Met fans and Skankee fans
I hate the Yankee fans because they say they have the best team and all that crap. Most of them became fans after 1996. Mets fans have always been and always will be Mets fans it shows now because we arent the best team but the fans still stand with the team the Yankee fans wouldnt do the same.
Re: Difference between Met fans and Skankee fans
met fans are really ignorant, if you disagree ,read some of the posts above , yankee fans have better things to do then insult met fans, met fans have nothing better to talk about , playing in the boring NL east , does that to them !!! LOL !!!
