I don't think the dice system works at all.
In some cases, dice ARE necessary to settle disputes (i.e. Warriors fighting or random chance of birthing a boy or girl) but in other instances they are ridiculous (a Physician needing to roll to bandage a paper cut? Puh-leeeaaze!)
Yes, dice can be "fudged." Many moons ago someone gave me a proggie for it, but I don't have it any more. It worked nicely too.
In the mud I'm designing, some "classes" will be leveled as per AD&D level tables. Warriors will follow the fighter system. Assassin's the thief system. Others will be strictly RP "classes" that can improve skills with practice (purchasing training sessions) or by being trained by someone of a higher skill level. Again, good roleplay will be enforced and rewarded.
