Deep deep deep space
Here's a link to one of the great astronomy photographs, taken from the Hubble Deep Field telescope. Almost every object in this view is not a single star but an entire galaxy. The fainter objects are among the most distant ever photographed.

Because of the vast distance of these galaxies, the light we're looking at left the galaxies themselves upwards of 10 billion years ago. The photo was taken by focusing the camera on a single, random point in space, no larger (from our perspective on earth) than a grain of sand held at arm's length.

Look at all the perty colors, Murky!

All that's out there and like the movie said, if we're the only intelligent life here then it sure is a big waste of space.
