College chess
Hi all
My name is Tom Cooper
I'm in the University of Limerick
I formed a chess club in the college a little over 2 years ago
I'm wondering is there an intervarsity in chess.
I've never noticed one, but think there should definitely be one in place.
With this in mind.
Could anyone involved in college chess contact me, please.
I would like to form a distribution list among the different college chess clubs
We could use this to set up friendly games, organise an intervarsity if one is not in place already, share info on what has worked/not worked within university for chess and whatever else benefits us all
Re: College chess
What makes you think I play for queen's stephen? ;-)
I'm at Queen's but I don't play for any club, infact I've got exams at the minute so I'm practically packing up chess at the minute.
This is a pity because the big tournaments are just coming up ;-(
College chess
Sorry mate what I think everyone meant was college teams that consist of players actually attending their respective colleges. Because if the Universities simply send club teams then UCD will whip everyone. It should be like all other college sports in college leagues where you must be attending the college to play for the college team.
Steve
I disagree because every other clubs would have to follow the same suit i.e. Civil Service only Civil Servants,
RVH only workers there and Fisherwick only members of church and so on so it wouldnt be fair if QUB where only fielding college players.
College chess
No you see RVH ( Royal Victoria Hospital ? ) and Civil Service are senior clubs open to anyone. One could play for a different senior club and play intervarsity chess for their College at the same time. For example I play for a club seperate to my college GCD but I am a student at GCD. A better example would be UCD. Many quality players here play for other senior clubs like Gonzaga, St.Benildus etc. and would also then be eligible for the intervarsity team aswell so long as they are students of UCD. But senior club players not students wouldn't be eligible.
However it might be argued that we should try to avoid confusion and use the regular senior club teams. However this policy might hurt smaller teams, for example I would no longer be available for my college team as I already have a senior club team.
Maybe a policy where you could be a player of the College senior club or a current student to be eligible for the intervarsity team ???
This would really open the doors to encourage intervarsity chess. Has anyone any other ideas ?

interfarcity
It sounds a good idea, but how are you planning on funding an ireland wide intervarsity league? When I was at university our chess club barely got enough money to pay for the league fees...
I'd shudder to think how you're going to pay for all the travel

univercity chess
when i said college chess, i meant persons attending the college as students. university teams may enter any comps with outside players if they want but when competing at college level only college players compete
this is the norm in all inter college events that i know of.
if any college wishes to play against the UL team
the players here could easily find couch here and there for them to save costs
have a game in middle of day and then head out with all the college croud that night
this would be ok policy for once off game.
This is an invite open to any college(just contact me)
a university league would be a hard job to run as most univercities not have that much money in their club
but a once off comp could be done an intervarcity
a once off travel would not break the bank of any club
I would be happy to organise a comp like this if i knew of many clubs that would be interested
College chess
It seems to me that poor Ian Davis must have gone to the stingiest college ever. They only barely paid the league fees, that's a good one.
Maybe we could organise a one day tournament. For example if we got 6 colleges to play for the Irish Intervarsity Championship.
The 6 teams would be divided into a Group A and Group B ( 3 in each ) and would have an all play all in the group stage. Then the winners of Group A play the Runners up of Group B, and the winners of Group B play the Runners up of Group A in the semi finals. Meanwhile the 2 teams knocked out in the group stage could play for the Irish Intervarsity Shield Competition.
Inter-Varsity Championship
Any University team interested in playing in the Irish Inter-Varsity Championship being run by the Irish Youth Chess Association, should make themselves known to Stephen Stokes at irishmercenary@yahoo.com as soon as possible as this competition will hopefully be run on the first weekend of Febuary.
Details may be obtained from that address aswell.
Contacts
I'm about to send out all the emails to the 3rd level institutions regarding the forthcoming Irish Universities Championship.

Re: webpage
UCD Chess Club is not competing / registered for 2003/04. However, there are a number of good chess players in UCD that are currently playing for other clubs but that would be interested in playing in Inter-university competitions also. From what I remember from last year, players didnt have to be playing for the university team in other to compete but simply to be a student in the university -- if this is still the case then UCD might be able to field a reasonably good team. Perhaps if anything is being organised, you could email or phone me? My mobile number is 087-6676499 and my email address is garth at vodafone dot. ie. Thanks.
