Carpet Stains

Please help. How do I remove a stain on my carpet from the ink cartridge in my computer printer?
-- Dawn Sheehan, The Colony, Texas

Changing cartridges sure can create a mess! It's important to get to any stain as soon as possible. The cleaning method depends on the type of ink.

If it's powdery: Vacuum first, holding the nozzle above the stain. (Touching the fiber might further grind in the ink.) Then apply a spot remover or carpet cleaner with foaming action to lift up the ink. Blot and repeat until the stain is gone. Finally, rinse with water and blot with a dry towel to remove the detergent or cleaning agent residue.

If it's a liquid: Blot up as much as possible with a dry towel, and be sure to work from the outer edge toward the center of the spill. Then dampen a clean, white cotton towel with isopropyl alcohol (do not pour alcohol directly onto the carpet), and blot the stain. Repeat until ink is no longer being transferred onto the towel. If there's still a stain, try blotting with household hydrogen peroxide on a white cotton towel. Rinse thoroughly. Allow to dry overnight.

To prevent ink-jet spills in my office, I place the cartridge inside a plastic bag before pulling off the covering strip, and I keep the bag around the cartridge while I insert it into and remove it from the printer.
