Buff moms
Just wondering how all the buff moms out there are teaching their children about fitness and healthy lifestyles? Is it being taught at school yet? And how do you feel about the obesity and video game revolution?
I have 15 year old son Andy I was brutally tough mom when he was small. All food was homemade and fresh. No sugar no sweets etc...nothing with preservatives or colours etc. It was a battle once he started to go to playschool and had a taste of others kids stuff When he was older and wanted something at the shop it would take forever to chose something decent. He kept saying that I am pain in ..you know where...I am lucky that I love cooking and experimenting with healthy tastefull food. There were always some oatmeal cookies or muffins sweetened with banana and so on.I have always kept meals fairly simple so he did not developed taste for greasy, creamy stuff. He loved steamed veg with a bit of butter or olive oil and salt-no need for anything else. For snack it was fruit and nuts and biltong(dried meat). I am not saying that he never had any fast food or chocolates or pastry...but it was kept to minimum and on special occasions
He was the only kid at school who had sixpack LOL.But he had/has super fast metabolism-typical ectomorph. Even eating nonstop and huge portions he stays very lean. When it came to sport or physical activities...oh well I was always busy doing stuff and he was stuck with me so he kinda joined me in whatever I was doing. If I played beach he would run on the beach and surf. If I was busy in the garden he would run around with the dogs and climb the trees and so on..
I think we as parents need to take responsibility and teach our children how to be healthy. It is not easy for sure...everywhere you look is tempting food and it taste soooo nice. But if we can give them good base hopefully they will carry on with the habits later on in their life I was fortunate that my grandparent lived simple life with simple food. My gran always cooked fresh meals with veg and fruit...so I guess it did stuck with me and helped me to found the way towards healthy eating
Re: Buff moms
Now thats a MOM!!! Good job on teaching your son good healthy habits!! I just wish there more people out there doing the same. But I guess when they are "too" busy prepackaged junk and fast food is easiest Did you find your son had good concentration is school from the good diet?
I hope this thread will open other "moms" eyes to a healthy lifestyle for thier children....its sooooooooooooooo important to teach this to the next generation Especially getting the kids away from the TV and outside being active
Kellie-Anne turns 6 tomorrow!!!!! I've always tried to keep her sugar intake to a minimum and she has never been allowed to drink pop. I started her drinking water as a toddler and even now all she drinks is water, milk or apple juice, and not even a lot of the juice. When she is thirsty, she will usually ask for water. I keep her sugary snacks to a min. and have fruit and yogurt for her to eat. I REALLY notice how crazy she goes on sugar. It's like a switch is thrown. We live with my Parents and they are becoming more aware of her reactions to and I've noticed my Mom offers her more fruit then just a quick snack. Kellie-Anne has grown up on brown bread. I don't eat potatoes or french fries at supper now and I've noticed that she won't always have potatoes and if we go to McDonald's, she doesn't eat her fries. We're off to a good start -- a bit at a time. Now I just have to replace her Fruit Loops in the morning -- she doesn't have this every morning -- usually fruit.
Re: Buff moms
As you say Ange One step at the time Drastic change in eating usually brings out binges and major cravings. I mean it is challenging for adults to control their eating even with the knowledge what sugar and processed food does to your mental side...but with kids it has to be sattle...The only fruit juice I would give my son was home made from fresh fruit and veg and it was diluted to the eyeballs So if he was given normal juice at the parties who would thing it was grossly sweet
To answer your question LA...From your own experience..how do people react to your eating habits? They think you are a bit of nut hey?! Well...kids would tease Andy about his snack and lunches.Who eats grilled chicken and steamed veg with olive oil for their lunch when they are 6 years old So he was the outsider and got laughed at.I would pick him up from school and he was angry and frustarted and beged me to give him something else to eat so they leave him alone...It was heartbreaking for me and I did not know how to handle it.I tried to make his lunches less healthy, but it was hard...so he stopped eating his food and waited untill he got into car when I picked him up and gobbled his food, cos he was ravished. Then he suffered cramps and digestive problems from not eating and then stuffing his face..So I totally understand todays parents dilema about food at school. You as parent can do only that much..it is up to school system to incourage healthy eating. I am pleased tabout what is happening in NZ.School are back on system where the kids get free fruit for snacks and lunches from goverment(they used to get free milk in olden days) The research said that up to 40% kids never eat fruit-how sicks is that!!!Sorry about such long post..I tend to get carried away
Re: Buff moms
You are so right Alushka -- I know when I started to bring healthier foods to work, I was worried about what others may think -- and I'm 37! I try to limit Kellie-Anne's sugar as much as I can and when her frineds are over, I limit theirs as well. Not sure how well it will go over at her party this weekend when pop will not be a choice of drink!!!! Right now, I only have to pack her a lunch 2 or 3 days a week and one day a week the kids are served a hot lunch! Next year it will be 5 days a week and then I have no control over if she trades things at lunch with her friends. I guess the best thing to do is be a good role model and keep junky stuff out of the house!!

Re: Buff moms
I do not want to sound like a feminist , but we females are the major force in shaping the society...We are in 90% cases the ones responsible for bringing up the new generation(and yes there are some awesome fathers out there-so pleeease do not rip me apart here -I am generalizing )..so whatever we teach our children it will reflect in the future. And I am not talking just about nutrition...I am talking about how we not only treat other human being but animals and nature Our opinions, behaviour and lifestyle makes a huge impression on our children, sometimes we do not even realize how much
