Bring on the Rain
well, this is the first time i've ever posted here, and its all thanks to suz. *muah* love ya babe.

ONE.

She sat at the table, looking at the newspaper her friend had set in front of her. Her life over the past few months had become something out of a Passions script and her head was still whirling from all of it.
“Socialite Murder Rocks the Lake.Great, Audrey.”
“I warned you, sugar. They’re getting desperate for information.”
“I bet they are. Listen, no matter what, you don’t know what happened.”
“Well, I don’t Jo. At all. You haven’t told me anything.”
“No assumptions, honey. Nothing.”
“All right, all right. You have my word, Jo.”

Six months earlier…

It all started with one unexpected meeting. Running into an old friend down on State Street. It just so happened that this friend was the one that she had missed the most, despite the fact that she refused to admit that to anyone including herself. And this chance meeting reaffirmed that to her. No getting around it, she had missed Pacey Witter like no other and had a hell of a time playing it off.

Despite all of that, they’d stood there for a good ten minutes before the mutual decision to go into the café’ and sit down to do their catching up on the last ten years. She told him about Worthington, about moving to Chicago for a job with the art conservatory. And finally she got to the part about meeting Jack Murphy.
“I take it you married into money by the size of that rock, Potter. I mean, Murphy. You know what? Screw it. You’re still Potter to me.” She smiled, scarcely containing her laughter.
“Yeah, well I better still be Potter to you, jailbait.”
“You didn’t answer my question.”
“What? The money?” He nodded. “Yeah. I guess you could say that. At the time, it was more like I married because I was in love.”
“Was?”
“Eight years with a work-a-holic is a long time, Pace. I probably should have analyzed our goals, too. You know, pre-marital.”
“Goals.”
“You know, kids, things you want to do before you die….”
“He doesn’t want kids?”
“Not a single one. Hell, he…” She stopped herself. “You know what? Let’s not get into all the sorted details of my marriage that leaves much to be desired. How are you?”
“Good. I’m good.”
“Is that all I get? You’re good?”
“I just bought a house, opened my own restaurant by the lake…”
“What restaurant?”
“You probably haven’t heard of it.”
“Try me.”
“Ligaya.”
“You opened Ligaya?” He nodded. “Pace, that restaurant is only the talk of the town. Congratulations.” He smiled. “I don’t know how we haven’t run into each other yet.”
“What do you mean?”
“You know that gallery next door?”
“J Murphy?” She nodded. “I own it.” He laughed. “Strange how things work out…” She nearly jumped out of her seat as her cell phone rang. “Jo-“
“Where are you?”
“Jack. I ran into an old friend and-“
“Josephine, I told you this morning that I needed you at the house by four. Its 4:30.”
“Okay, I’m on my way.”
“Yeah, you better be. Bye.” He hung up and Joey looked at Pacey.
“You better go.” She nodded. “Listen, I’m sure I’ll run into you soon.” She handed him her card.
“Give me a call, Okay?” They both stood, as if on cue and Pacey pulled her into an embrace.
“I’ll definitely be calling you, Potter.” He kissed her cheek and she walked out, stealing one more glance at him before heading to her car. Back to her reality.

Re: Oooooooh
Two.

Joey walked into the house and Katherine took the bags from her, giving her a look of warning. Joey just nodded and walked back towards the voices. Jack was going to have her head for this one.
“Tom, give me a break. John McClintock isn’t going to sell to just anybody. Especially not to the guy who put his father away for twenty five to life.” Joey rolled her eyes before walking into the library, a saccharine smile on her face.
“If it isn’t my two favorite lawyers. And in the same room, what luck I have.”
“Josephine, beautiful as always. How goes it at the gallery?”
“You know, same old shit.” Jack shot her a look and she moved towards him, planting a kiss on his cheek. “You’ll have to excuse me. I need to freshen up a bit.” Tom nodded and Joey walked out, leaving Jack fuming on the inside.

When she came back down, even more people had arrived and Jack had consumed a few drinks. Just enough to make him calmer and yet loosen his tongue. She’d managed to either ignore or cover his spiteful remarks with witty quips, but her patience was definitely wearing thin after four hours. At ten, as she ushered the last of the guests to the door, she could feel his presence close to her, as if he was waiting to pounce.
“Unless you want the cops out here again, Mr. District Attorney, I suggest you keep your distance.”
“Who was he?” She spun towards him.
“Excuse me?”
“Old friend my ass. Who were you with?” She shook her head. “Tell me!”
“Jackson Murphy, you’re drunk. I suggest you choose your words wisely because you and I both know about Brittany McClintock. I’m sure Tom would love the fact that you’re having an affair with his daughter of all people.”
“You wouldn’t dare.”
“Wouldn’t I? You’re treading on thin ice, babe. Don’t forget, no pre-nup.”
“Who.”
“Jack… it was Pacey Witter. An old friend from high school. I’ve known him since I was born.” He looked her over. She rolled her eyes and walked upstairs.
“You have to be screwing someone, Josie. We haven’t even slept in the same bed in six months.”
“Yeah, about the time I found that sixteen year old with you in mine.”
“Who is it?”
”You’re delusional.”
“Who?!” She turned violently towards him.
“No one! I’m not the adulterer here, Jackson! You are! As a matter of fact, you’re a statutory rapist so I suggest you go pack sand in your ass!” She went into her room, slamming the door and locking it.

Jen looked at the caller ID and walked away from the crowd in the bar.
“What’s up?”
“Adulterating horse’s ass just accused me of having an affair.”
“Nice. Why are you still with him?”
“Like I know… guess who I ran into.”
“Pacey.”
“What are you psychic?”
“No. He’s here at the bar.” Jen sighed. “Listen. You know I have the papers ready for you whenever you’re ready, Jo.”
“I know. Sorry about this. Go back in the bar.”
“Are you sure? You know you can stay at my place if you want. I’ll…” Jen trailed off as Pacey came outside.
“Just call me tomorrow, eh?”
“You bet. Night, Jo.”
“Night.”

Re: ...
Pacey walked out back of the restaurant, taking a deep breath of the semi-fresh air. He hadn’t been out there a full minute when the back door to the gallery opened and Joey came out, lighting a cigarette and sitting on an empty crate. He shook his head, smiling to himself.
“I heard those things’ll kill you.”
“Oh, bite me,” she said, not bothering to see who it was.
“There’s the Potter I know.” Her head jerked towards him and he instantly moved towards her, seeing her black eye. “What the hell?” Cognizant of what he was referring to she let her hair fall across her face.
“Don’t worry about it.”
“Don’t worry about it? Did Jackson do that?” She didn’t answer him. “Josephine Potter, you know you’re gonna answer my question.”
“Pacey, don’t make more of it than there is. I told him I was seeing a lawyer to start our seperation and he flipped.”
“You’re seperating? Is he at the house?”
“No. He’s at his apartment.”
“Apartment?”
“Yeah. The one where he shacks up his 16 year old mistress.”
“Jesus, Jo.” He sat next to her. “You need a drink.”
“Hell yes.” He laughed.
“We close in twenty minutes. Come by and I’ll get you trashed on the house.”

Joey walked in and the waitress smiled at her.
“Mrs. Potter-Murphy. Its nice to see you again.”
“You too, Lara.”
“We just closed two minutes ago. Did you-“
“I’m just here to see Pacey.” A look of surprise came over Lara’s face.
“Oh. He’s back at the bar.”
“Thanks.” Joey walked back to the bar and slowed her pace as she saw Pacey behind it, cleaning up. “How Brian Flannagan of you, Pace.” He turned and looked at her.
“There you are. I was wondering when you’d get your butt over here. What’s your poison, Potter?” She sat down.
“Whatever you want to kill me with.”
“Ooh. You’re gonna regret that one.”
“Why’s that?”
“Well… we’re gonna start with a Three Wise Men.”
“Which is…”
“Jack, Jim and Jose’, of course.”
“You going shot for shot with me?” He looked her over.
“That’s not even a challenge.”
“Boy, I’ll drink you under the table.”

12 shots later…

Pacey and Joey made their towards Pacey’s car, Joey’s body coming to an abrupt stop as they reached the Eclipse. He looked at her, realizing she’d stopped.
“What?”
“I should go home.”
“I don’t want you driving.”
“So I’ll do what? Sleep in my car?”
“No. You can stay at my place.” She bit her lip and he moved over to her. “Potter, you aren’t driving.” He took the keys from her hand. “Get in the car.”

Joey woke up the next morning, not quite sure where she was until she heard that familiar early morning grunt that could only come from Pacey Witter. She looked down, not sure whether to be enthralled or disappointed that she still had clothes on and seeing his hand playing with the waist of the boxers he’d given her. He gently kissed her earlobe. “Morning, Jo,” he whispered into her ear, sending a chill down her body.
“Pace.”
“Your phone’s been ringing for two hours.”
“What time is it?”
“9.” She closed her eyes again. His lips found her neck and she closed her eyes, relishing in the familiar feel of his lips on her skin.
“Pacey,” she whispered and he stopped, his breathing already becoming wavering. His phone rang and he grabbed the receiver by the bed. No sooner had he answered it than he was out of the room, leaving her in the bed alone. She got up, finding her clothes and changing.

Joey sat on the front porch, waiting for the taxi when Pacey came outside, looking at her.
“What are you doing?” She looked at him.
“Waiting for my taxi.” He shook his head and grabbed her hand, pulling her back inside. “Pacey!”
“You’re not taking a taxi back to your car, Jo. If you want to leave, I’ll take you.” He sighed. “Look, I’m sorry about this morning.” She crossed her arms over her chest. “I shouldn’t have-“
”Pacey shut up before you stick you foot so far in your mouth that it comes out of your ass. I’m not mad. You acted like you wanted me to leave so I’m leaving.” She looked at the door as the taxi honked. “You answered the phone and walked out.”
“Okay, we aren’t gonna do this analyzing thing.” He kept his eyes on her as the taxi honked again and she set her jacket on the back of the chair. “What happened this morning was… just the familiarity of having you next to me. Instinct made me start kissing on you and if it bothered you that much why-“
“THAT isn’t what bothered me. You know what? Let’s just drop it, okay? What happened, happened.”
“Fine.”
“Fine.”

Joey unlocked her car, getting in the front seat and looking at her cell phone. 8 missed calls. Scrolling through them she sighed. 7 were from Jackson. She put the car in reverse, driving to the house and pausing before going in, seeing Jackson’s car in the driveway.
“That’s just beautiful. I need to deal with him right now.” She walked inside, going upstairs to her room and straight into the shower, showering the remnants of last night from her body. She got out, walking into the bedroom and looking at Jackson sitting on the bed. “Can I help you?”
“Can we talk, Jo? I’m sick of this game we’re playing.” She smirked, getting fresh clothes from the closet. “Baby, please.”
“Don’t baby me. And this isn’t a game. We’re over Jack. You probably just realized how you messed up.”
“No. Don’t tell me that, Jo.”
“I want you to leave.” She went into her closet, changing and came back out, seeing him still sitting there. “What did I just tell you?”
“Josephine… who is he?”
“I don’t know what you’re talking about.”
“All of the sudden you want a divorce?”
”No. All of the sudden I realized that I deserve to be happy and you can’t make me and your mistress happy at the same time.” He stood up. “Get out or I’m calling the police. All you need now is a domestic disturbance put on your squeaky clean record.” She grabbed her bag, walking out.

Joey walked into the gallery and looked at Fiona standing there with Pacey as he pretended to be interested in a painting on the wall. Then she realized he was trying to buy one that wasn’t for sale. One of the ones she had painted of True Love forever ago.
“Mr. Witter, I’m sorry but that painting isn’t for sale under any conditions.”
“She’s right. No sale.” He turned and looked at her.
“I wonder where you got the inspiration for that one.” Joey glanced and Fiona and Fiona walked away, shaking her head.
“What are you doing here, Pace?”
“Giving you this.” He handed her a piece of paper, watching her as her eyes scanned over it. “It’s the Grand Opening of Ligaya. I really want you to be there Jo.” He smiled. “Come on babe. You know you love free food.” She laughed. “Anyway, its tonight at nine. I’ll see you there, right?”
“Of course.”
“Good.” He kissed her forehead, walking out.

Joey walked into the restaurant, almost turning around and running as she looked over and saw Jacksononson and Pacey talking to each other. Pacey saw her and excused himself from the conversation, going over to her.
“I know that look. You’re not going anywhere.”
“Pace… you’re talking to my husband.” He looked back over at Jackson.
“He’s here with some chick.”
“Brittany McClintock.”
“I think that’s who he said…”
”Yeah. His underage mistress.” Pacey looked back at the two and then back at Joey.
“You outrate her any day. Especially tonight. Look at you, sexy.” She shook her head as a slight blush crept over her face. “And you’re blushing. That brings in that whole, would-she-blush-if-I thought.”
“Pacey, enough!” He kissed her cheek and grabbed her hand, taking her to introduce her around.

Jackson walked over to Pacey, finally catching him without Joey.
“So how long have you been @#%$ my wife, Witter?”
“What?” Jackson laughed.
“Don’t play stupid. You two are way too comfortable with each other to be just casual acquaintances.”
“Do you have any idea how long we’ve known each other?”
“Whatever you say.”
“Jackson. I’m not sleeping with your wife. But I could ask what you’re doing with a 17 year old.”
“16 and Josephine couldn’t satisfy me if she still was trying.” Pacey took a deep breath. “Tell me the truth. You want to take her.”
“Take her?”
“Take her.”
“First of all, Joey can’t be taken, as you so drunkenly put it. Second of all, I know you’re just trying to shoot the @#%$ with me, but please. That’s one of my best friends you’re talking about.” Jackson looked Pacey over, deciding against a reply. He simply turned and walked away and Pacey walked over to Jen.

Joey sat at one of the VIP tables, watching the entire exchange from a distance. Her life had become some strange alternate to what it used to be and in only the last few weeks. She mindlessly ran her fingertip along her lower lip and looked at Jackson again, feeling his eyes on her. She rolled her eyes as he got up, walking over to her and sitting down.
“You look beautiful tonight.” Her eyes searched his features skeptically. “What?”
”What do you think you’re doing?”
“I can’t pay my wife a compliment?”
“Not when you’re here with your mistress.”
“At your lover’s grand opening?”
“Pacey isn’t my lover.”
“What, you couldn’t get him to have sex with you either? God knows you couldn’t get me to.” Her fingers played with the stem of her wine glass. “And now you can’t even admit that you want him. You’re such a closed up bitch, Josephine. Its no wonder.” She tossed her wine into his face and walked away, pushing her way through the crowd to the back door, letting it slam behind her. She cursed as she realized that she’d left her purse at the bar. Just as she was about to go back inside the door opened and Pacey stepped outside, holding her purse.
“What was that about?” She took the purse from him, lighting herself a cigarette.
“He’s an @#%$.”
“Well, if its anything like what he said to me earlier, he deserved that fifteen dollar glass of wine in his face.” She looked at him, smirking. “From that look, I’m guessing it wasn’t good.”
“He’s just being himself.” Pacey shook his head.
“You wanna get out of here?”
“You can’t leave. Its your grand opening.” He started walking towards his car.
“Are you coming or not?”

She had barely said a word during the ride to his place until he reached over, his hand finding her thigh.
"You shouldn't have left. Especially not for me because stuff like this happens all the time with me and Jackson. I just usually yell back and throw things and I didn't because it was your benefit." His hand moved farther up her leg. "Pacey where are we going?"
"Home." He pulled into his driveway and looked at her. "So what do you think we should do now?" She raised her eyebrows. He got out of the car and walked over to her door, opening it for her. She stood up and he couldn't resist the urge any more. He closed the space and kissed her, his tongue moving languidly with hers. His mouth moved to her neck, relishing in the taste of her skin.
"Pace." He finally looked at her again. "We should probably go inside." He kissed her once more for good measure before taking her hand and leading her inside.

Joey laid in the bed, staring out the window through the space between the curtains that opened and closed with the blowing wind. She could feel the rise and fall of his chest against her bare back with each breath that he took, and the warm rush of air against her neck after each slight snore. Joey allowed her eyes to flutter closed for a moment, opening them again as the snoring abruptly stopped.
"Why aren't you sleeping?" he asked in a low tone after placing a soft kiss on the curve of her neck and shoulder.
"I can't. I have too many thoughts going on in my head right now."
"Tell them to shut up." She smirked. "I missed you, Jo. More than I knew."
"You shouldn't have."
"Yes, I should have." He turned her to face him. "And I'm really having to stop myself from killing him for ever hurting you... or from taking you right here and now." He kissed her and pulled back, looking down at her. "You're so beautiful." She glanced away from him. "No, look at me." She did. "I mean it. You're absolutely gorgeous."
"You're insane." He smiled and laid next to her. "You are."
"Go to sleep, Joey."

Joey groggily opened her eyes to her cell phone ringing and grabbed it off of the nightstand.
"Hello?"
"Where are you?"
"Jen? What time is it?"
"Noon."
"Oh Jesus." Joey looked down, realizing she was naked beneath the sheet, and last night came flooding back to her. "Oh my God."
"You're standing me up. Where are you?"
"Um..."
"Please tell me you know at least that much."
"Oh, I know."
"Where then?"
"Can I call you back later?"
"Josephine!"
"Bye, Jen." Joey hung up and went over to her clothes, quickly getting dressed. This was insane. She had actually slept with Pacey last night. She finished getting dressed and walked downstairs to the kitchen, seeing Pacey staring out the kitchen window drinking his coffee. She walked up behind him, kissing his bare shoulder. "Morning."
"Your cab should be here soon."
"Okay," She said softly and he turned around, looking down at her. She looked away from him and he kissed the top of her head as the cab honked its horn.
"You should go." She nodded and walked out of the house, letting the door slam behind her. She couldn't believe that she could be so stupid.

Jen opened her door and looked at Joey, in the same clothes she'd been wearing last night.
"Get in here." Joey walked in, letting her purse drop onto the couch. "So who was he?"
"Don't make me answer that. I feel like enough of an idiot." Jen stared at her for a moment.
"Oh my God."
"What?"
"Pacey?" Joey's eyes grew as big as saucers. "Jesus Christ, Jo. Wait. Why are you so upset?"
"Because he regrets it. Either that or..."
"Or what?"
"That's all he was after in the first place." Joey sat on the couch.
"You don't think that."
"Jen... last night was... perfect. And then this morning I came downstairs and he had already called a cab for me and told me I should leave." Jen sat down next to her.
"Joey... let's get you changed."

Joey looked up as there was a knock on the door to her bedroom and the door opened.
"Jesus Christ." She watched as Audrey come even closer. "He did this? Jack did?"
"He sure did." She took the camera out of her purse.
"Honey... I don't know why you even let him near you."
"I don't even know how I got here." Audrey looked at her.
"It'll be over soon, babe."

Pacey looked at Fiona as she walked into the restuarant with her date and she smiled at him. He instinctively smiled and motioned her over.
"Hey Pacey."
"Hey, where's Joey been?"
"She hasn't been coming in."
"Well I know that. But she's also not taking any phone calls." Fiona looked at him, not wanting to break her silence. "Fiona. I've been friends with her since we were 2. Just tell me."
"Jackson. He fractured her cheekbone and her jaw, and they had to keep her in the hospital for two weeks with her jaw wired."
"Excuse me?"
"She's not taking calls because she can't. Not because she doesn't want to." He nodded, concern covering his face. "They're releasing her Thursday. She'll be at Jen's."
"Okay. Thanks Fiona... don't worry about dinner, I'll take care of you guys." She smiled and kissed his cheek.
"Thank you."

Jen glared at her cell phone as it rang at three in the morning. That could only be one person.
"Witter, now is not the time."
"In that case you can just hand the phone over to her."
"Her who?"
"I know Joey's there."
"First of all, how do you know that? No one knows that. B, you are the last person she needs to be talking to. Well, second to last."
"What are you talking about?"
"What am I talking about? Hm. You screwed and then treated her like a drunken mistake? Maybe that?"
"No I didn't."
"You called her a cab and told her she should go."
"Okay, yes, but I didn't-"
"Mean anything by it?"
"Exactly."
"You're still not talking to her." He sighed. "Why would you do that?"
"I don't know."
"Pacey."
"Jen. I guess... Listen, the entire reason I woke up was because Mary called."
"Why did Mary call?"
"She always calls that day. It would've been Shanna's 7th birthday."
"Oh Jesus, Pacey. Why didn't you just tell her that?"
"I don't know. I figured it was just sex for her. You know, not having it for a while and... I know. I'm an idiot."
"Yes you are. What the hell makes you think she ever got-" Jen stopped. "Dammit."
"Wow."
"I did not just say that."
"Uh huh. I'm coming over."
"Pacey."
"I have a key Jen. I'll just walk in."
"I'm not gonna even attempt to stop you. Its pointless."

Joey's eyes opened as Pacey sat next to her on the bed, watching her with concern. She looked at the clock, trying to figure out if this was morning or night. Four-thirty.
"Who told you?"
"No comment." She started to sit up and he stopped her. "Don't get up. I just needed to see you for myself... make sure you were okay."
"I am."
"I think your husband has a death wish."
"I think he has enough people in his pocket to get away with it." Pacey walked over and shut the door, taking off his shirt. "What are you doing?"
"Going to sleep. And I doubt you want to smell my alcohol soaked clothes all night long," he said as he stripped from his jeans and climbed into bed next to her. He brushed her hair back from her face. "Look at me." She just shook her head. "I'm sorry for the other morning. I didn't mean to hurt you. Mary had called because it would have been Shanna's birthday, and... I really didn't mean to hurt you, Jo." She looked at him. "Really."
"I'm gonna kill her."
"Who?"
"Jen. I can't believe she told you."
"Told me-"
"I know she told you from the way you're looking at me."
"How am I looking at you?" Joey stuggled to hold back the tears.
"Like you don't feel the same."
"Joey..." He hesitated, not knowing whether to tell her the truth or lie. "I wish I did." He decided on the lie. "You're an amazing woman. And I would be the luckiest man on earth if I felt the same way."
"But you don't." He kissed her forehead and the tears began to fall from her eyes.
"Baby, I can't. After Mary and Shanna..." She nodded.
"It's okay."
"No its not. Joey... you're one of my best friends, and I can't stand that I'm hurting you. I just... bad things happen to those that I love."
"Well I guess that I'm screwed." He looked at her. "Good night, Pacey."

Joey walked out of the bathroom as Jen came into the apartment, Pacey, Audrey and about 3 other people in tow. Pacey's arm dropped from around the waist of the petite blonde, that had apparently tagged along with them, as soon as he made eye contact with Joey. She went into her room, slamming the door and Audrey went in after her.
"Hey, chickadee."
"I'm invoking attorney client privilege."
"Oh God." Joey pointed to her trash can and Audrey's eyes fell upon the open pregnancy test box. "Please tell me this is a bad episode of Punk'd."
"I wish."
"And daddy starts with a P?"
"You bet." Joey sat on the bed.
"You should tell him."
"I know."
"Soon."
"I know."
"At least get dressed and come out there." Joey nodded and Audrey opened the door, walking out. A few minutes later, Joey came out and glanced at Pacey and the blonde sitting next to each other on the couch before going into the kitchen. He half expected her to just go back into her bedroom and ignore them, knowing her. But she walked over to the group, sitting on the carpet near the fireplace with Jen.

"Wait a minute. You're saying that you never ever ever want to get married again?"
"Exactly."
"And what if you got a girl pregnant?" Pacey just looked at this girl. "What if?"
"That wouldn't happen."
"Why?"
"I don't want children. Ever again."
"So you would what, make her get rid of it?"
"I wouldn't make her do anything. I just couldn't be there."
"How sweet," Audrey said and Pacey looked at her. "You're saying that if you were to get, say, Joey or Jen pregnant, you'd skip out." He looked at Joey. "Hypothetically."
"They're not stupid enough for that kind of mistake."
"You're not answering me."
"You're not listening. I'm saying it wouldn't happen because they wouldn't let it. They'd probably get rid of it before they told me, if they ever told me." Joey finally made eye contact with him and neither of them looked away. "You girls are evil. Now you've suckered me into thinking Joey might be pregnant, which we all know is bullshit."

Pacey walked out onto the balcony, looking at Joey.
"Feeling better?"
"I guess." He nodded.
"So what's wrong?"
"What? Why would something be wrong?"
"Um, that answer for one. And the way you were looking at me earlier." She smirked. "You forgot how well I know you, Jo."
"You're getting cocky."
"You're being secretive." She took another sip of her water. "Just tell me."
"No."
"Joey..."
"You don't want me to."
"Joey."
"You'll get mad. And walk away. And say you need to think. And then we won't talk for another three weeks."
"God dammit, tell me already." She looked at him, her expression serious.
"Fine. I'm pregnant."
"You're what? That's not funny."
"Who's joking?"
"Joey... it was only that once."
"Yeah. I remember."
"You were right. I need to think and I'm gonna walk away."

Joey rubbed her eyes, taking a break from the stack of paperwork in front of her. All she wanted to do at the moment was get out of this office. It felt unusually tiny to her. At this point it wasn't the fact that Pacey's restaurant was basically next door, or the fact that she knew he was there from his car parked out back. It was that she had 6 weeks of inventory and appraisals and other paperwork that she now had 26 hours to get to her accountant.
"Josephine, Josephine." She slowly looked up at the familiar voice. Jack McPhee. Correction. Dr. Jack McPhee. She smiled.
"What are you doing here, McPhee?" She asked, standing up to hug him.
"What a warm welcome. I'm in town visiting for a week or so."
"Ah."
"So what do you say we head over to your baby's daddy's restaurant for dinner?" He raised his eyebrows at her deer caught in the headlights look. "What is that about?"
"Nothing."
"Right. Spill."
"We haven't exactly spoken since I told him. And remind me to thank Jen for telling you."
"Why haven't you spoken?" She sat down. "Okay. How long?"
"A month."
"Wow. Well we're eating there anyway."

Joey shifted uncomforably in her chair and Jack smiled at her. "You feel him watching you, don't you?"
"Of course I do."
"He's barely looked away since we walked in."
"He's the one who said he needed time to think. Not me."
"You could make a move, Jo," he said, biting into his garlic toast.
"I could." She sighed. "And I could get up and go to the restroom. Excuse me." No sooner had she left, than Pacey came over.
"Jack."
"Daddy." Pacey frowned.
"I know. I need to talk to her." Jack nodded. "I just don't know how to."
"Depends on what you're gonna say. Are you gonna be the Pacey we know and love? Or a donkey butt?" '
"I still don't know."
"Yes you do. You're just scared. Don't you dare leave, Pacey. She's about to sit down." Pacey looked at Joey as she sat down across from Jack. "Better, honey?"
"Hm. Of course."
"Hm. My turn." Before either of them could say anything, Jack was gone.
"Are we waiting nine months for you to talk to me?" Joey asked, sipping her water.
"Its not that I don't want this, Joey."
"That's exactly what it is. You already told me you basically don't want anything but friendship from me. And now you obviously don't even want that."
"Yes I do."
"You've got a funny way of showing it." She still hadn't been able to make herself look at him.
"Can we talk someplace else?" She nodded and he took her hand, leading her back to his office and shutting the door. "Do you even realize how absolutely terrifying this is for me? Not even to mention that you're still married, Jo. I can't take anything like what happened to Shanna again."
"If you're gonna tell me that you don't want anything to do with us, then just say it." She finally looked at him and he shook his head.
"That's never been what I wanted."
"Then what? I know you're scared. So am I. But that doesn't change the fact that in 7 months this baby will be here." He still hadn't let go of her, and she was just realizing this. "Pacey..." He slowly moved towards her. "Please don't kiss me," She whispered.
"What if I do?" He whispered back. His gaze moved to where she was absentmindedly chewing on her lip. His free hand moved up, his thumb stroking over her bottom lip.
"Then I'll fail."
"Fail at what?" His eyes looked back at hers and she looked away.
"At not loving you." He kissed her forehead. "I shouldn't love someone who won't let himself love me back." He kissed her lips.
"Let's go home, Jo."
"He has people following me."
"What?"
"Jack. He has Private Investigators following me." Pacey nodded, reality hitting him like a ton of bricks.
"Meet me there in two hours."
"Pacey-"
"If they follow you, they won't see anything." She nodded. He kissed her again. "I'll see you then, love." He kissed her once more, walking out.

Joey walked up the stairs to Pacey's front door, softly knocking. She glanced over her shoulder at the familiar white car that had parked a few houses down.
"C'mon, Pacey," she said under her breath as she knocked again. Finally he opened the door, and she walked inside. "I told you he'd follow me." He shut the door and she followed him back to the living room.
"Don't worry about it. What kind of car is he in?"
"A white civic. Why?" He picked up the phone, dialing. "What are you doing?"
"Jonah, hey, its Witter. Yeah. I need a favor... there's a guy in a white civic in front of my house.... yeah, he's a P.I. tailing my friend. Thanks buddy. Definately." He hung up and looked at Joey. "He'll be gone in twenty minutes."
"Who was that?"
"A cop buddy of mine."
"You have cop buddies?"
"There's alot you don't know, Joey." She sat down on the couch and he brought her a glass of water.
"Thank you," she said, staring at the pictures on the entertainment center. He walked back into the kitchen and she stood up, moving closer to the pictures. Most of them were Shanna or Pacey and Shanna. She set down the water as he came up behind her. He brushed her hair to the side and she quickly turned around, but not before he saw the bruises on her neck and shoulders.
"Where did those come from?" She just shook her head. "Did you go back to him?" He asked, almosting accusingly.
"No. He has a key, Pacey. Its still his house."
"So he can just come in and beat you whenever."
"Yeah, well this time he just pushed me down the stairs." He looked away and quickly looked back.
"Is the baby-"
"The baby's fine."
"What about you?"
"I'm... I'm fine too."
"No you aren't." He sat down. "Why are you still there?"
"I can't stay with Jen forever. And its not like you were speaking to me." She turned away from him.
"I am now." She didn't move, so he walked over to her. "Joey, look at me."
"Do you think I'm that stupid? That I would just go back to him?"
"No... I didn't... God, you're the only woman who makes me like this." She looked at him.
"Like what?"
"Jealous, and overprotective, and... I want to kill him, Joey. I want his head on a stake in my front yard."
"Can we stop talking about him?" He nodded, his blood still boiling from the mental image of him pushing her down the stairs. "Pace?"
"What?"
"Why did you want me to come here?"
"So we could be alone."
"You always do this," she said, moving away from him. "Every single time...."
"Do what?"
"You know I'm in love with you. And we both know you don't feel the same way. But every time, you make me think you might be, and we both know you won't. Ever."
"What if I'm a liar?"
"A liar? You're honest to a fault."
"I lie to you." Her forehead furrowed and she looked away from him. "I always lie to you."
"So tell the truth."
"I can't." She started for the door. "Joey, wait." She stopped walking, biting her lip to fight her tears. "I don't want to fight with you. Just... sit down, okay? Please."
"What for?"
"Josephine, please." She did, and he sat next to her. "I will tell you the truth, but not like this. Not with both of us fighting."
"Please just tell me. If you're still married, or you're in love with someone else, fine. Just tell me." He turned her head gently towards him and she quickly wiped at the tears falling down her face.
"Its not someone else." The tears started falling even faster. He softly kissed her lips. "When I told you I wished I felt the same way... That's where the lie started."
"What?"
"You'll always be my love, Jo." He looked at her as she stood up.
"Wait... you are in love with me?" He nodded. "But... you said..." He nodded again. "Why would you do that?"
"Because It scares me to death, Jo."
"Loving me scares you?"
"I've loved you for twelve years. If something happened to you, or I lost you, I couldn't take it."
"So the alternative is lying to me and breaking my heart? And not speaking to me when I tell you I'm pregnant? And making me feel like I'm just some screw to you?"
"Pacey?!?" He stood up as Mary's voice echoed through the house. "Are you home, honey?" Pacey looked at Joey.
"Jo... I forgot she was coming." Joey walked into the bathroom and Mary set down her bags, walking over and hugging Pacey.
"Who was that? I thought you said you were going out of town."
"I was."
"So you just, what, avoided talking to Joey and taking her to the beach house?"
"That was Joey." Mary's eyes grew wide.
"Oh my God. And in walks your ex." They both looked at Joey as she came out of the bathroom.
"Jo... this is Mary." Joey gave her a small smile.
"Nice to meet you," she said softly.
"You too, honey. Listen, I'll just go to the guest room and-"
"Don't bother," Joey said, cutting her off. "I was just leaving." Mary elbowed Pacey as Joey went out the front door and he took off after her. He cut her off just before she opened her car door. "What are you doing?"
"You can't leave."
"Your wife is waiting for you."
"My ex wife is only here because I was planning on talking to you last week and taking you to the beach house tonight. She's only here to house sit." Joey leaned against the car. "You have every right to be pissed at me right now. But you can't just leave."
"You did."
"I know."
"Pacey..."
"Come back inside." He didn't let her answer before grabbing her hand and leading her inside, all the way to his bedroom. He shut the door and her eyes fell on the picture of the two of them at his restaurant opening sitting on his nightstand. He grabbed the pair of pajamas from his dresser handing them to her. "Its getting late."
"Yeah."
"We need to sleep on this."
"I know." She stood up, unzipping her dress and stepping out of it. Pacey looked at her unfolding the pajamas in her underwear and heels. Joey smirked and put on the pajama shirt.
"WHat, you think that helps? You'd be sexy in a potato sack." She sat on the bed, taking off her shoes and putting on the pants. Pacey finished undressing and looked at her dress and shoes in a neat pile on the chair. He climbed into bed next to her and she looked at him.
"I need to hear you say it."
"Say it?"
"Pacey, stop joking." He nodded and brushed her hair back from her face. "Please."
"I love you, Joey." Her eyes fluttered closed and he kissed her. She kissed him back, and his hand quickly found her as.s pulling her closer to him. He moaned as her tongue found his and she maneuvered herself beneath him. "I want you Jo," he said as her mouth found his ear and he began unbuttoning her top. He moaned again as her back arched slightly, giving him the access he needed to pull down her pants and panties. "You're so beautiful."
"I love you, Pacey," she said and he kissed his way down to the apex of her legs. She moaned as he stuck two fingers inside of her, his breath teasing her clit. "Baby, please."
"Baby please what?"
"I want you to eat me." He flicked his tongue over her clit. "Oh God, please, baby." He lifted her hips slightly, sucking on her clit until she came. "Pacey..." She said breathlessly. Instantly he began to suck on her even harder and he body suddered again. "Wait... I just...." He moved down, sticking three fingers in her @#%$ and one in her ass and moving in and out as he continued to suck and lick, not stopping with each convulsion. After she could no longer even say his name, he moved up, sliding into her. Her back arched again and she moaned, grabbing onto his shoulders. "Tell me."
"I love you. God damn, I love you." Joey gripped onto him as she came again. She opened her eyes as he stopped moving to see him watching her intently.
"Love... you're amazing." He kissed her, slowly pulling out of her. He smirked. "What?"
"I hope the baby wasn't trying to sleep." Joey smiled. "Oh, that's what I've been looking for."
"What?"
"That smile."
"Well you took it. You had to give it back." He looked at her seriously.
"I'm an idiot."
"Yeah."

Joey's eyes opened and she looked at the alarm clock. Eleven a.m. She pushed her hair out of her face, looking at where Pacey had been sleeping. She closed her eyes again as she felt a strong wave of nausea sweep over her.

Pacey walked into the bedroom, stopping as he heard her morning sickness echoing from the bathroom. He set down his coffee and walked over to the door, looking in at her. She was sitting with her cheek resting on the cool toilet seat, sitting on her heels.
"Morning, love." She slowly opened her eyes.
"Mm, morning."
"You alright?" She nodded and he reached into the bathroom drawer, pulling out an extra toothbrush.
"I think its over." She slowly stood up and gave the toilet an extra flush for good measure. Joey glanced at him as she rinsed out her mouth and took the toothpaste out of the drawer.
"So, what's on the agenda for today?" She finished brushing her teeth and looked at him.
"I need to go back to the house and change. And go back to the office."
"Joey, its Sunday. No work."
"I have six weeks of paperwork to get to my accountant." He nodded and pulled her over to him.
"Well you aren't going back to that house by yourself." She looked up at him and he smiled. "You were amazing last night," he said, his voice taking on a low tone.
"I didn't do anything."
"Oh yes you did," he said, and she smiled.
"You're getting excited just thinking about it." He moaned as she kissed him, closing the bathroom door and undoing his pants.
"God, what are you doing to me?" She reached into his pants, stroking him a few times before pushing down his pants just far enough to free him. Pacey looked down as she took him into her mouth. "Oh, Jesus." He grabbed onto the edge of the sink as she stood up and began to stroke him until he came on her pajamas. He looked at her and she stripped from the soiled shirt and pants, turning on the shower. He pulled her back over to him and kissed her. "You've turned into a nymph." Joey raised her eyebrows.
"Pace... you realize that out in public, or at my house..."
"I know. We're a big secret."
"Just until the divorce is final."
"Its not like we're cheating here. You're legally seperated." She nodded. "You are, right?"
"Yes." Pacey kissed her.
"Go take your shower. I'll see you downstairs."

Mary looked at Pacey as he walked into the kitchen, grabbing another cup of coffee.
"You just had sex again." He looked at her.
"What?" She crossed her arms over her chest. "How do you do that?"
"We were married. I know you. You've got that smug I-just-had-sex look on your face." Pacey smiled. "Is she okay?" His smile faded.
"I think so. But probably not. She's gotten really good at pretending she's fine." Mary nodded and sat at the counter. "I want to kill him, Mary."
"Its only gonna get worse before its final, Pace. He's a dirty DA."
"I know."

Joey came downstairs and looked at Pacey and Mary watching the football game. He looked at her and smiled before walking over to her.
"We should go. Katherine said he's golfing, so he shouldn't be there."
"Okay."

Pacey looked around as he followed Joey into the house and let out a low whistle. The house was enormous.
"Pacey." He followed her up the stairs, slowing as he realized that this was probably the stairs she'd been pushed down. He followed her into the bedroom and stood there while she walked into her closet, grabbing a change of clothes and went into her bathroom, changing.
"Where's the bitch?" Jackson asked, walking in and Pacey looked at him.
"Changing."
"Hm. Screw her lately?"
"Beat her lately?" Joey came out, hearing voices and immediately took a step back.
"What are you doing here?"
"We need to talk Josephine."
"You can talk to my lawyer."
"Funny. Meet me in the office." He walked out and Pacey looked at her.
"Let's get this over with."

"Here." Joey took the papers from Jackson. "Everything's divided. I keep my private practice, you keep your gallery. We keep our cars. Everything else is sold and divided." She looked at him.
"I know about the pictures Audrey's been taking. Those will take prescedence over anything I have on you, including your baby." Joey scanned the papers, reading every word. "Give it to Audrey. Its only valid until Friday. If I don't have it back by then, we'll fight it out." Joey nodded and walked out, not saying a word to him.

Audrey walked into Joey's office, glancing at Pacey.
"This better be a miracle, otherwise I'm charging you." Joey handed her the papers. "How did this happen?"
"Someone told him about the pictures."
"Wow." Audrey sat down. "I'll go over it, but it seems pretty legit."
"Alright then."
"I'm hoping you two worked things out."
"We did," Pacey said, flipping though his magazine. "You almost done?"
"Almost," Joey said. Audrey nodded.
"I'll call you about this tomorrow, Jo." Joey nodded and Audrey walked out.
"I'm gonna go get us some lunch," Pacey said and Joey looked up at him. "I'm goin crazy in here." She smiled.
"Okay."
"I'll be back," he said.

Joey finished putting all of the paperwork in a manilla envelope and closed it, standing up.
"Alone at last." She slowly looked at Jackson. He moved foward and she instinctively backed up. "You think you're pretty smart, don't you? Bringing him with you?"
"Jackson-" She jumped as he hit the door.
"You don't actually think I'll let you have this baby, do you?"
"That's none of your business." He backhanded her, pinning her against the wall.
"If I have to kill you to stop it, I will. Or I'll just kill your lover boy."
"Get off of me." He looked at her and smirked.
"I own you, Josephine." He grabbed her by the neck. "But you know that." She pulled at his hand as she struggled to breathe. She slumped onto the floor as he released her and walked out. She stood up and walked into the bathroom, locking the door.

"Jo?" Pacey knocked on the bathroom door. "You alright, sweetie?" She looked at her reflection in the mirror. He jiggled the handle. "Open the door." She finished putting the powder on her neck.
"I'll be out in a second, Pace."
"Unlock the door." She took a deep breath and unlocked it. He moved over to her. "So he waited for me to leave?" He tilted her chin up.
"Apparently."

Jen opened her door, and Joey walked in, pacing.
"Okay, I thought everything was perfect now." She walked over, looking at Joey's neck. "Jesus Christ."
"I have to break it off with him," she said, nearly hyperventilating. "And... and get an abortion," she said, her voice cracking.
"Okay, sit down." Joey did and instantly started crying. "What happened?"
"He said he was going to kill Pacey. And the baby. And I know he will. Or he'll get someone to."
"Jo..." Joey looked at her ringing cell phone and Jen answered it.
"Get over here."
"Jen?"
"Now, Pacey." Jen hung up and Joey buried her face in her hands. "You can't just leave him, Jo."
"What else can I do, Jen?"
"Fight Jackson. He's not God, Joey. He can't cover his wife in bruises and threaten people's lives and expect nothing to happen." Jen took her hand. "C'mon. You're gonna go lay down." Joey laid down on the couch, barely awake for a few seconds.

Pacey walked in and looked at Joey.
"What the hell is going on?"
"Where have you been?"
"She left me at the gallery. I went to the bathroom and she was gone."
"He told her he was going to kill you and the baby. She came here saying she had to break it off with you and get an abortion so that he wouldn't." He headed for the door. "Pacey, where are you going?"
"I've got some friends I have to see."

Pacey sat at the bar, slowly drinking his beer.
"What's up man?" He looked at the four men in uniform.
"Jackson Murphy."
"The DA Jackson Murphy?" Pacey nodded and they sat down. "Your Joey is Josephine Murphy?" Jonah asked.
"Sure is. He told her that he was going to kill me and our baby."
"She's pregnant?" Pacey nodded. "And its yours?" He nodded again.
"Wait, aren't they seperated?" Mike asked.
"They sure are."
"Is there any proof?"
"There is of him assaulting her and attempting to choke her."
"When was this?"
"Today."
"Well lets go then," Tony said.

Joey's eyes slowly opened, and she sat up seeing the four cops.
"Jo, these are some friends of mine. Jonah, Seth, Tony and Mike. This is Joey."
"Oh, Jesus Christ, honey." Jonah sat on the table in front of her, looking at her face and her neck. "Murphy did this?" She nodded, glancing at Pacey.
"Its okay, love."
"You don't understand, once he hears about this..."
"Joey?" She looked at Seth. "Murphy and all his buddies are already under investigation by IA."
"They are?" Seth nodded.
"they are."

Pacey looked away from the muted tv as he heard soft footsteps. Joey looked around the corner at him and he patted the seat next to him. She slowly walked over, sitting next to him. He pulled her legs over his. He looked back at the tv.
"You're scruffy," she whispered as she rubbed his cheek.
"Yep."
"Are you busy tomorrow? I have a doctor's appointment and we're supposed to do the first ultrasound. You can come if you want to." He didn't move. "Pacey, I'd really like it if you came."
"I can't."
"You can't or you won't?" She said after hesitation.
"Can you not talk right now?" She stared at him, her lip quivering. He turned off the tv, still not looking at her. "You shouldn't be getting ultrasounds if you're just getting an abortion." She stood up.
"Go to hell Pacey," She said, walking out. He turned the tv back on as he heard the door slam.

Pacey finally came into the bedroom and looked at the empty bed and the blood spots on it. Joey came out of the bathroom, putting on her coat and her shoes. She walked over to the table, grabbing her keys and her purse, leaving him standing there.

Joey laid in the hospital bed, watching the clear liquid drop down her i.v. She looked over at Jonah as he knocked on the open door.
"I was hoping it wasn't you. Where's Pacey?"
"At home."
"Why?" She shook her head. "Does he know you're here?"
"No."
"He does now. I left him a message saying I hoped it wasn't you. Is the baby okay?"
"They might be."
"They?" She nodded. "Twins?"
"They're keeping me for observation."
"We arrested Murphy tonight. For your assault." She nodded and looked at Pacey."I'll be outside." Pacey looked at her and shut the door.
"Why didn't you tell me? Or call me? God, Jo, is there even a baby anymore?"
"Now you care?" He walked over to her. "Because you sure as hell didn't earlier."
"Answer my question."
"Yeah, there's still a baby in there. As a matter of fact, there's two."
"Twins." She nodded. "Great." Joey bit back her tears. "What?"
"Is this over?"
"Is what over?" Pacey walked out.

Joey stood on his front porch, trying to work up the nerve to knock on the door. She turned around to walk away and the door opened.
"Joey?" She turned and looked at Mary.
"Hey. I just needed to get some of my things."
"He's not here."
"Oh." Mary looked at her belly.
"Come on in."

Pacey pulled into the drive and sat there looking at Joey's car. He got out and walked into the house.
"What is she doing here?"
"Shut up, Pacey," Mary said. "For God's sake, she's just getting some of her things."
"I'll be in the office." Mary walked upstairs and looked at Joey sitting on the bed. He had taken their photo out of the frame and the frame was just sitting there empty.
"You got everything?" Joey looked at her. She walked over to the trash bag he'd already put her things in. "Joey?"
"So are you guys back together now?" Joey blurted out, the words laced with her hurt.
"No." Joey looked at her. "Joey... he's in the office if you want to talk to him." She shook her head and pulled an envelope out of her purse.
"Can you just give him this for me?" Mary nodded, taking the envelope.

Pacey waited until her car was driving away to come out.
"Since when do you hide?" He shrugged and she tossed the envelope at him, taking her bags to the car. Pacey sat at the counter, opening it. He pulled out the papers. The first one was the ultrasound showing the twins. Baby Boy and Baby Girl. He set it down, opening the letter.

Pacey,

I can't seem to get up the nerve to dial your number, or walk into the restaurant. That's just as well though since you probably wouldn't want me to anyway. I'll be surprised if you even read this letter, rather than just throwing it away or burning it. There are a million things I want to tell you, even though you probably don't care too much to hear them.

As you can see, the babies are a little boy and a little girl. They're due December 14th and since our last time seeing each other they're doing great.

They're starting to move and kick. Every time they do I wish you were here to feel it. I wish things were different and that you didn't feel the way that you obviously don't. Since you probably aren't even reading this I don't know why I'm trying to word things right.

The divorce went through and I bought a new house out across town. It has four bedrooms and a huge backyard and its the perfect neighborhood for the twins to grow up in. Its the house I always pictured raising a family in. But right now I just sit in it alone every night, trying to remember what happened. I can't. I can't think of one single reason that you're not here with me and I can't remember why it is that you hate me. That's what I think about every night. The fact that you hate me so much that you don't even call to see how they are. And I know that when they're older they're going to hate me too, because its obviously not that hard to do and I ruined it for them. Not that I blame you for it. I hate myself too.

No matter how you feel, I'll always be in love with you. I can't help that. I just hope that you're happy with Mary or whoever you're with. They're the luckiest woman on Earth.

Joey

Joey walked into the house, setting down the bags as she turned on the lights to the kitchen. She went through her ritual. She sorted through her mail, grabbed her dinner and sat on her couch in front of her television. During the entire ritual of her night she had her phone with her, occasionally looking at it and setting it back down.

The only thing different about this night was the fact that she had an observer. Pacey sat in his car across the street, watching her through the living room window. He'd had her address for three weeks and come here three times now. Each time he'd sat there with her letter in his hand, occasionally reading it over again. She hadn't lied. The house was picture perfect, on a street lined with sycamore trees and with a park at one end next to the elementary school. Add a creek and it was their hometown.

Pacey slumped down in his seat as he saw the familiar car pull up in front of her house. He cursed under his breath as Jen noticed him and walked over, leaning in his car window.
"Hello Stalker. Whatcha doin?"
"Nothin."
"Nothin' huh? How many times have you done this?"
"Three now."
"Is that her letter?"
"Yep." Jen smiled.
"You're such a chickenshit." He looked at her. "You've abandoned her twice since she's been pregnant, bud. What do you think you're doin? Either go inside or stop coming."
"And say what to her? Hi Jo, sorry?"
"That's a start." She stood up. "She tries to pretend she's okay, but she always asks if I've heard from you. And if I have if you asked about her or about the twins. The girl's 16 weeks pregnant and is working her as.s off to try and keep her mind off you. But God knows that doesn't work because you're right next door." He rubbed his forehead. "Just come sit on the porch. If she wants to talk to you, she'll come outside."

Joey looked at Jen as she walked inside and smiled at her.
"Hey Jen." She sat down, looking at Joey. "What?"
"You have a visitor."
"What?"
"You. Have. A. Visitor."
"Who?" Jen raised her eyebrows and Joey looked out the window at Pacey sitting on her steps looking at his hands. She looked back at Jen. "What... you brought him?"
"No. He was sitting in his car across the street. Apparently getting up the nerve to come over." Joey walked over to the mirror on her wall, attempting to fix herself. "That's so cute, Jo."
"Stop it. I look like crap."
"Calm down. Just go out there and listen to him." Joey looked at her. "Go."

Pacey looked at Joey as she walked outside, sitting next to him.
"hey," she said, and he smirked.
"Hey." He took a deep breath. "Why is this so hard? Its just us."
"Because its us." He looked at her, his eyes going to her swollen belly.
"I wish we could just start over."She nodded and he looked back at her hands. "I got your letter."
"Yeah."
"Jo... do you really want to know?" She nodded. "I understand that you were at your breaking point. And that he had the connections to do what he said. But you said you wanted to get an abortion. I freaked out, ok? After losing Shanna, for you to say that you'd just... kill these babies..."
"Jen shouldn't have repeated that. I said that after being attacked. I never would have actually done it."
"So we both freaked out. Now what?"
"That's up to you."
"No its not. I'm the one who messed up."
"What do you want?"
"To start over." She looked at him.
"As what?"
"Friends. We're both too hurt for anything else."
"Well... how about my friend comes inside then?"

Joey sat on the couch as the movie started, and Pacey walked in with the popcorn, glaring at Jen who'd taken his seat. He sat next to Joey, setting the popcorn on the coffee table.
"Oooh." Jen said, jumping up and dimming the lights. She sat back down.
"Jen-"
"Shhh. Its starting."

Jen stood up and stretched, looking at Joey asleep on Pacey and Pacey asleep with his arm around her, his hand resting on her belly. She quietly grabbed her purse, walking out, a smile on her face. She couldn't have planned this better.

Pacey's eyes opened and he looked at Joey.
"Pacey," She murmured and he smirked. "Do you wanna sleep over?"
"I don't know."
"Just sleeping." She opened her eyes, looking up at him. "I just don't want you to leave yet."
"Alright." He followed her upstairs, stopping to look in the open doors to the nurseries. One was purple and green with dragonflies and another was red, black and white with footballs and basketballs and baseballs and soccerballs. He went through the open door she'd gone through and looked around her bedroom.
"Pacey?"
"I'm right here." She came out of the bathroom to see him already stripped to his boxers and in the bed. She climbed in next to him and he brushed her hair back from her face. "Good night, Jo."
"Mm hm." She found her comfortable spot on his chest and within seconds she was asleep.

Pacey woke up, taking a second to realize where he was. He pulled on his shirt and pants, walking downstairs to find her in the kitchen cooking.
"Oh look, you're barefoot in the kitchen."
"Funny." He sat on one of the stools surrounding the kitchen island and she set a plate in front of him with bacon, eggs, sausage and toast.
"Well this is a good morning." She smiled, setting the cup of coffee in front of him. "Even better."
"I haven't slept that well in a while."
"Good. This is a great house, Jo. Its old, but..."
"But not? I know. Its restored." She stood across from him, eating from her plate.
"Sit down."
"Nah, I'm fine. Really." Joey looked at him. "So what's new, Pace?"
"Nothin... I've just been..."
"Avoiding me?"
"Pretty much. I didn't know what to say to you."
"Yeah, well that letter was one of 22 drafts." He smiled.
"22?"
"22."
"This is harder than I thought."
"Your toast?" He laughed.
"The just friends thing." She nodded. "So, any names yet?"
"I don't know. I like Jenna."
"Jenna what?"
"Jenna Michelle." He smiled. "I figured you could name him."
"What about Peyton?"
"Peyton?"
"Peyton John."
"I like that. Sounds a bit like Pacey."
"Yeah." She took his empty plate from him, setting both of theirs into the soapy dish water. He grabbed her hand. "Come here." She let him pull her over and he hugged her. He kissed the top of her head. "You smell good."
"I do?"
"You smell like you." She looked up at him. "You're tempting me."
"I'll stop." He kissed her forehead, turning to his coffee.

Joey sat there half asleep on the couch, flipping through the channels as her phone rang. SHe jumped, grabbing it and answered it.
"Hello?"
"I figured you'd be asleep." She smiled at the sound of Pacey's voice. "I was just going to leave you a message."
"Well I could hang up and let you leave a message."
"Funny. How are you?"
"Fine. The house is making noises."
"Its talking to you."
"Maybe. BUt what is it saying?"
"Call 1800TERMINIX." She looked at the clock.
"Are you at the restaurant?"
"Yeah. Slow night."
"You're hiding in the office."
"Yep. What are you watchin?"
"Oh, some Lifetime movie."
"You're such a girl."
"Apparently." He sighed.
"Well... I just wanted to check on you."
"Right. You were checking on me by leaving me a message."
"Yeah."
"Alright. Well you have your key if you want to come by."

"You think I'm just gonna let you go? I own you."

Joey sat up in bed, wiping the mixture of sweat and tears from her face. Her nightmares about him were becoming a nightly occurance now, and every time she woke up completely drenched in sweat, with tears running down her face, and barely able to breathe. And it had all started with the 2 am phone call from him two weeks ago. She got up from the bed and walked over to her glass of water. Joey took a drink, trying to calm herself down, but the tears were still streaming down her face. She walked into the hallway, her drenched body trembling in the cool night air.
"Jo?" She jumped at the sound of Pacey's voice, hitting her head on the cabinet door and dropping the sheets. Pacey walked over, looking at her as he picked up the sheets. "Love, what's wrong?" She shook her head.
"Just a nightmare." He kissed the top of her head.
"Go change and I'll change the sheets."

She came back into the room just as he'd finished the bed and she put the wet nightgown into the laundry hamper.
"Want to tell me what-" he stopped as the phone rang and she jumped. He picked it up. "Hello."
"Back with the bitch, huh?"
"You're violating your restraining order."
"Gonna call your cop buddies again, Witter?"
"Don't tempt me." Pacey hung up and looked at Joey. "When did that start?"
"Two weeks ago." He clenched his jaw. "I've changed numbers twice."
"Come here." She did and he wrapped his arms around her. "You know he can't get to you, Jo." She nodded. "The nightmare was about him?" She nodded again.
"Pace..." He held her tighter as she started trembling.
"Don't worry, love." Pacey looked at her. "He's in jail. He can't come after you." She nodded and he sat down. "You wanna get some sleep?"
"Yeah," she said, her voice ragged. She climbed into bed and he stripped down to his boxers, putting the sheets into the hamper and climbing in next to her. He heard her breath hitch and turned towards her.
"Baby, calm down."
"I... can't."
"You do this every night?"
"Pretty much."
"Try to calm down." He stroked her hair. She was on the verge of hyperventilating. "Joey." He kissed her and she closed her eyes, her breathing instantly slowing. Before he knew it, it had turned into a 30 minute makeout session. He pulled back, leaning his forehead against hers. "I'm sorry."
"It fixed me didn't it?"
"Yeah. But we're trying to be friends and-"
"Did you want to?"
"Hell yes."
"I'm pregnant with your babies, it might be okay for you to kiss me." He kissed her again.
"What if I want to kiss you someplace else?" He kissed her again, unbuttoning her shirt to reveal her swollen breasts and belly. A quiet moan escaped her lips as he began to gently kiss and lick her nipples. He looked at her as he pulled down her shorts, moving between her legs. "Jo." She looked at him.
"I want you to." He entered her and watched as her eyes closed and her lips parted. With each thrust, her moans got louder until she went limp beneath him.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Pacey's eyes opened and he looked at Joey asleep next to him, her naked body wrapped in the sheet. He closed his eyes, last night flooding back with him. The phone call, the kissing, the sex. He looked at her and smiled when he saw her looking back at him.
"Morning, beautiful.
"Morning."
"So..." He scratched his head. "Last night was-" She raised her eyebrows. "Yeah." She kissed him and got up, walking into the bathroom. She looked at him as he came into the shower behind her. She bit her lip as he backed her into the corner. "You call that a kiss?" He kissed her, his tongue finding hers as her finger slowly made its way down to her clit. She moaned as he moved his fingers inside of her, expertly finding her g spot.
"Pacey-" She moaned and he lifted her leg, pressing against her. He kept kissing her, even as he lifted her up and entered her, holding her up against the wall. Joey bit her lip as he set her down, moving onto his knees and sucking on her clit. He grabbed her a$s, holding her steady as he sucked harder. Every time her body would shudder with an orgasm, he massaged her g spot, making it last even longer, while flicking her clit with the end of his tongue.
"Jo? Are you in here?" They both froze as Jen's voice echoed through the bathroom. "Jo?"
"I'll be down in a minute Jen."
"Alright." Pacey stood up, kissing her.
"We have a problem," he whispered into her ear. She nodded. "You realize she already knows." She looked at him. "My car's in the driveway, Jo." She winced. "We could just swear her to secrecy."
"I-"
"Shh. Just go get dressed and I'll be downstairs in a few minutes." Joey got out of the shower, getting dressed.

Joey sipped the coffee Jen had brought her, glancing at her every once in a while.
"So, when is he coming down?" Joey looked at her. "Oh, come on."
"Soon." Both of their heads turned as Pacey came bounding down the stairs and slid into the wall with a thud.
"Smooth, Cassanova." Pacey walked in, rubbing his forehead.
"Morning, Jen." He looked at her and she shook her head. They all sat there in silence, just staring at each other. "Someone needs to say something."
"Why are you sneaking around?"
"Because its no one's business."
"Right. You're hiding it from your friends who want you two together anyway because..."
"Every time we get together, everyone knows before we even figure things out. Its complicated."
"Hm. Okay. You and your babies' mama are back together. Whatever." Jen set the bag on the counter, looking at them. "Ya know, when you decide to stop using her for a fuckbuddy and playing house, let me know. It'd be nice if you actually treated her like she deserves." Joey bit her lip. "I'll call you later." They both watched her walk out and Pacey moved behind Joey, kissing the back of her neck.
"She'll get over it," Joey said.
"She's right." Joey looked at him. "Sneaking makes it seem like we're doing something wrong." He took her coffee from her, walking into the living room.

"Lose your phone?" Pacey looked up from his desk at Joey.
"What?" She shrugged.
"I just haven't heard from you in a few days."
"I'm sorry baby. I've been swamped here." She nodded.
"I just... wanted to make sure everything was ok. I'll let you get back to work."
"Joey-" She walked out and he leaned back in his chair, rubbing his face.
"Hey stranger." He looked at Sara.
"Hey. What are you doing here?"
"I brought you your clothes. You forgot them the other night."
"Thanks."
"And... I just thought maybe you'd want to get some dinner or something." Joey froze, hearing this entire exchange. "You know, as a thank you for the other night." She quickly walked away, letting the back door slam behind her.
"Sara. I told you I'm involved with someone. I can't go to dinner with you." She smirked.
"You weren't too concerned with her before."
"You don't know what I was concerned about. The other night, I helped you change a tire. That's it. You need to leave."

Pacey opened his phone, looking at the text message from Joey.

Have fun with your girlfriend.

He shook his head, dialing her number.

"Hello?"
"You are my girlfriend."
"Tell that to Sara."
"Sara? What does she have to do with anything?"
"Why don't you just let me know when you stop fuking her?"
"What?" He stood up. "Jo, I'm not fu-" she hung up. "Dammit." Pacey grabbed his coat, heading out to his car.

She didn't even bother to look up from her spot at the bottom of the stairs when he walked in. She'd known he was going to come over, especially after she hung up on him.
"How did you get it into your head that I'm cheating on you?"
"I haven't heard from you in days, Pacey. And then I hear Sara thanking you for the other night and giving you clothes you left over there. What am I supposed to think?"
"You're supposed to trust me." He brushed her hair back from her face. "Baby..." She handed him the envelope. "What's this?"
"Read it." He sat next to her. His eyes scanned the scrawled handwriting on the paper. He isn't the man you think he is. Open your eyes. Pacey Witter is not your loyal loving boyfriend.
"What the hell? Who would send this to you?" She looked at him and he brushed his thumb across her wet cheek. "Baby... I didn't cheat on you. I'd never cheat on you."
"Then why haven't you even called?"
"I told you. I've been swamped. I've been working and sleeping and that's it."
"Right." She stood up, pacing. "Pace, maybe we should just-"
"Stop it." He stood up. "Don't you dare say it."
"You don't even have time to call me."
"Jo, I'm sorry." He walked over to her. "I'm sorry. But don't break up with me just because of this." She looked at him. "Baby..." He kissed her. "Baby..." He kissed her again.
