Bowhunting in the UK
Hi, why is there no bowhunting in the UK?
Is there any reason, after all, deer are shot with rifles, and blood sports are popular enough not to be banned.
So why not bowhunting?

bowhunting
Hello Ian. Greeting from Slovenia where there is also no bowhunting but plenty riflehunting.

I am not hunter and I will most probably never be but I have even more strong opinion on it than you. Not only why not bowhunting, but ONLY bowhunting (perhaps even not allowing scopes and releases) should be legal. My country is full of so called sunday hunters and political hunters and also manager hunters. These selfproclaimed creme of society can only prosper in their combination of drinking and killing because other people prepare them stands near feeding spots and give them rifles with optical and even infrared scopes which can kill a deer at 200 yards. If only bowhunters would be allowed on the ground, we would at least be certain that animals have fair chance, that hunters invested hours and hours in perfecting their skill and are not maniacs shooting to the bushes at every unindentified sound.

However, people supporting riflehunt as opposed to bowhunt (because they could never produce enough effort to be able to do it) are too strong financially and politically for this situation to change, so I guess neither here nor in England there will be any change in near future.

PS. This chat forum seems as inhabitated as Sahara. I wonder what the reason might be, since The Glade, to which I subscribe and know it very well, is really a high quality magazine. It seems that users of computers have rather small intersection with serious users of bows.

Bowhunting is forbidden in Britain as a result of the Deer Act of 1963 in which no missile may be used to injure or kill animals. In Scotland, with the permission of the landlord, it is sometimes permissible to hunt deer but, even here, I believe bowhunting is not allowed. In certain parts of England, guns are used to hunt foxes on farmers' land but, as I understand it (and somebody could put me right) this is only allowed because they are considered vermin. In England, only dogs are allowed to hunti deer - legally, that is!

Re the Sahara Desert: I agree. it is a shame that not more people do not use this forum. They certainly log-on to the site. I can only think that the adveretisements may be a deterrent. TED

Re: Bowhunting in the UK
To All,
Howdy! from the State of Oregon, USA. I am an avid target archer, as well as an avid archery hunter. In the State of Oregon I hunt Blacktail deer, White tail deer, Mule deer, and Elk. Archery has become a passion for me, and I'm extreamly interested in learning new things about my chosen sport.

To be honest, I felt a little strange joining this forum, due to the fact that I know nothing about the UK. The more I thought about it, the more I realized how much more I could learn from "Fellow" archers from around the world. Suddenly... this forum seemed perfect!

Here in America, we can hunt just about anywhere out in the forests'. Being "Unable" to hunt, and the reasons behind this, (although very unapealing to me) I find very interesting. So... I guess I have already learned something from Ian's question!!!

Borut Zalar mentioned that many "hunters" in his country are self proclaimed elitists' or "Self proclaimed cream of society". We have some of the same type of hunters here in America. Unfortunately, many of these same individuals turn a perfectly good hunting trip into a "drunkards weekend out in the woods". This in turn gives many ethical hunters a bad name, due to thier association with hunting. In turn, some "non-hunting target archers" are viewed in a poor light, simply because they shoot a bow, due to the association between a bow, and hunting. I guess people are people... no matter where they are from!

My hope is that others will comment on the reasons for not being able to archery hunt in thier home lands!!!

I hope my comments are welcome here, and that this forum turns into an "Oasis" for many archers, and does not remain as unpopulated as the Sahara!

UK Regulations
I must admit I think the UK has pretyt much the most draconian rules on everything I'm moving into archery from an Airsoft background(using plastic bb's in wargames) and I feel it's pretty stupid some of the rules we run across, most contradict each other making a true reading of the law almost impossible. but I think that archery unlike shooting requires much more skill and precision, most people could probably aim and shoot a gun given 10 rnds for learning, and some free reign, given the same opportunity, I doubt the same can be said for archery. in any case, I must admit, the idea that any hunter is an irresponsible prick with a lethal weapon is pretty damn stupid, just people judge before they know(the same can be said about airsoft) in any case, can anyone recommend a site int eh north of england?

Bowhunting
Hello to all,
I am a licenced guide in Canada and have had the honor of hunting and fishing in many parts of No. America. With my ancestory origins being in Scotland and having a tremendous desire to travel there I had hoped to participate in my favorite sport there "bow hunting". However I am even more dismayed to find that the nobel "treehuggers" have been so successful in the uk, than I am about their efforts here in Canada. I only wish there were some way to have a truely educated consencious of the will of the people and not just the few who run these laws through rough- shoed with their "talking Disney animal mentality. I regret that a dream of my life will never be fulfilled now. I truely wish that the treaty that the good King Robert the Bruce had signed with England still stood and my people were truely free. I wish for the same for all nations and all people. It seems that we have all gone mad seeing talking rabbits!

bowhunting
hi all,
I've been visiting this site for a while but like many not been commenting on anything, mainly because being new to the sport i didn't want seem naive. But i feel the main reason for not hunting with a bow in England is that we don't have the number of game animals as other larger countries or the personnel prepared to do all that political paperwork. On a personal note i would only be prepared to hunt animals such as rabbit and wild fowl where numbers are fairly unlimited.I think a reason why some people don't comment on this subject and just watch from afar is the fear that being associated with bowhunting may bring too much attention from the government to field and target archery, bringing with it licensing or even a ban on the whole sport.Renaldo

hunting UK
The Hunting Regulations in the UK date from the 1956
Game act prohibiting the use of spear or any projectile with a velocity of less than 1100 ft/sec and a diameter of less than 0.24" this effectively rules out bows and a lot of fire arms calibres that were used for deer hunting before the implementation of the act, this act was to stop the poaching of deer with the bow, as it effectively
doubled the offence, there were guys around who could take a deer, but they then faced the extra offence of using an illegal device, a man in Northumberland became the first man ,in 1959 to be charged under the the act.
another draconian UK law,Keep your fetchings dry!

hi all,
bowhunting deer is illegal in the uk but is bowhunting pests such as rabbits, foxes, rats.
surely its not illegal to shoot rats with a slingshot, so I guess you'd be allowed to shoot them with a bow. therefore rabbits and other pests would come under the samee rules , right?
Just a thought any way.

How many people in this forum are interested in bowhunting? Maybe we could get together to hunt france or some other bowhunting legal country. That would be great. :D

Thanks for your time
Darrell

Re: north of england archery

Hi Darrell
I'm pretty sure it would be ok to shoot rats with a bow, i'm not sure about rabbits and foxes though. I think they too are classed as vermin, which might make it OK.

I think the big problem is that were it legal to bowhunt in the UK, then anyone could do it. Can you imagine the mayhem ? No training, no licences. Idiots would soon injure people out walking.

Not so with the gun fraternity. Their sport is heavily regulated.

Some may argue that this is the direction our sport should take. I disagree. I don't want endless crap from the government. Stuff their regulations and stuff their licences too.

I just like to go somewhere quiet and practice. I couldn't shoot a deer, moose or bear, I don't think. But I would like to go on an American turkey shoot. Birds are such stupid animals.

Wild pigs are now restablished in parts of the UK. I think I could hunt a pig too.

This of course would be illegal, as well as a bit dangerous.
