Best Movies of 2001
Have to admit I didn't get to as many movies in 2001 as I normally would in a calendar year. Some of the best I saw were;
Wonder Boys
O Brother Where Art Thou
Rain
Onegin
Chocolat
There wasn't one film I was compelled to go back and see again, in its first run.
I never made it to 'Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon' and I have to say the comments I heard were mixed in the extreme. Anyone have any thoughts on this movie?

I loved Wonder Boys because first of all it was filmed in the city where I live and some of the places were my haunts when I was in school, so it was deja vu in some ways. But also I love any thing about literature and writing.(Finding Forrester is another good one). I love the "Finding Oneself" theme.......because I tend to do that about once a month. Another real interesting movie is Moulin Rouge. It starts out kind of silly and a sort of slapstick thing happening....and I can't put my finger on when it changes...but by the end of the movie I was all choked up with the story and intensity of the performances.
"Wonder Boys" was worth seeing just to catch Michael ("Sharp suit") Douglas slobbing around in that dressing gown.
As a writer there was some significance for me in the examples of the young depressed nutcase with a genius talent and the one book author whose next work was running to 2000+ pages. Makes me wonder where I'd fit in that continuum.

Re: Best Movies of 2001
I felt it was a bit autobiographical for Michael Chabon. He had had a major success in the Mysteries Of Pittsburgh and then we waited forever for his next book. He said he started many but coudn't complete. So he wrote Wonder Boys and that kind of thawed him. This year he was the Pulitzer Prise winner. If you haven't read Wonder Boys, I recommend it...like all books there was so much more than in the movie.
