Back to Basics
“Damage report.”
“Yes sir, all ships have been destroyed with little to salvage. Less than a hundred mobile dolls left.”
“And personnel?”
“Nearly all dead, save for the main ship, some managed to escape with their mobile suits.”
Auray sighed, “Damnit, and this ship?”
“Our main ship has sustained only minimal damage, though the artillery room was destroyed and a few injured from the blast. All remaining suits have only their weapons, none to spare. Most, if not all, of the personnel weapons and ammo have been destroyed.”
Auray nodded and took the folder from the official and looked over the finer details. Everything they had was down to minimum. Auray stood on the bridge and overlooked his ships pilots and handlers. He turned to the navigator, “Is the course still set for X-10?”
“Yes sir, it is. Would you like to continue on course?”
Auray nodded again, “Yes…” I hate having to do this, but there’s no other options. We need to rebuild, fast and by any means.
Meanwhile, on the outskirts of Earth’s colonial rim sat a small colony considering themselves independent. A radar blip indicated a large ship heading in their direction. A docking bay overseer flipped through his charts and hollered down to someone below, “Hey! Do we have any shipments coming in today?!”
“Not that I know of!”
“Strange,” the overseer muttered to himself. Upon closer inspection, the size of the ship was realized.
Inside an office sat the president, so to speak, of colony X-10. A knock came from the door. “Come in!” A man dressed in a suit stepped in, “Sir, they’re here and their ship is larger than this colony itself, we advise that…”
“Alright, alright. Patch me through.”
Inside, Auray watched a vid-screen, the picture sharpened and the man spoke to him, “Ah, yes, I remember now, Mr. … Ertaize, was it?”
Auray nodded politely, “Please, call me Auray. So, would you like to do this in person? Mr. ?” He searched for a name.
“Brinerwitz, Vern Brinerwitz.”
“Of course, why don’t you come aboard then?”
Once aboard the ship, the president, along with his guards, was taken to an office. Auray rose from his seat and sat once everyone else had. “Mr. Brinerwitz, if you haven’t noticed, this is all I have left, a single ship out of many. I’ve been looking to rebuild. I’m hoping you can help me do this. My remaining men need provisions and materials. I need the resources your colony offers.”
Vern seemed nervous and not too eager to comply, “Well, I understand your losses, however, I don’t see why I should sign all that I have to a teenager.”
“Is that how I seem?” Auray rose from his seat, his temper was easily broken now. “How long do you honestly think you’ll last independent from earth?”
Vern sneered, “And what of you?”
Auray seemed to keep his cool but his blood boiled on the inside, “Oh, I can assure you that I’m very well set off even at minimal. You could be a part of this, something greater. You’re colony has potential, you’ll see it for yourself eventually, if it’s not too late. Now which would you rather, friend or foe?”
“Hmph! Maybe you can do some enticing with some ideas of yours.”
“But of course!” Auray damn near smirked, perhaps this man wasn’t such a fool as he seemed, “I propose that you become more involved with…say, being a part of Earth. Or make it seem that way. You can legitimately order any supplies you need with plenty extra. I mean, with you being independent, as you say, you’ve been surviving on your own, yes? So, show them you’re still around and interested in their help. Meanwhile, with all the supplies you’re receiving, you’ll be turning your colony into a mobile ship. It’s small so I’m sure it can soon become maneuverable. What do you say?”
“Well…what your saying just might actually work. Besides, this may just be what I’m looking for.”
“Exactly, and before they realize what’s really happening, you’ll already have disappeared off of their map and then you will be fully independent along with me and the rest of Vis.” At this, Auray then did smirk. Vern Brinerwitz laughed, the hunger for power had set in him and there was no turning back. They shook hands prepared for the task at hand. The people on X-10 would live their normal lives as they have been, supporting their colony as technicians, mechanics, military personnel, etc. However, they are now under Vis Vires’ control, though they feel they are becoming more independent by the day.
