An introduction ...
Hello, all ---

I recently re-read 'Jane Eyre' and fell completely under its spell again.

I purchased the A&E Morton/Hinds version several weeks ago (profoundly disappointing), rented the Fontaine/Welles version last week (oh, dear ...) and just received the Clarke/Dalton adaptation (the best of the lot, so far). I may buy the York/Scott version yet --- it's the first one I remember, and therefore has a certain sentimental value.

I have read so much about the 1973 production that I am longing to see it, too. Following some inspiration from the IMDb discussion board, I wrote to BBC America to see what they have to say about a re-broadcast or re-release of the original.

Anyway, it is good to find fellow - uh, *enthusiasts*. (isn't that more period than fans?) :D I look forward to reading more!

Hi Joy!

And welcome to our board! I think that your judgement on 'enthusiast' is astute. Whenever I read Jane Eyre, I find that I start including phrases and words from the book in everyday conversations (just last night I said to someone 'exactly! ...precisely!' ;)

I think I have seen all of the available adaptations of Jane Eyre. I thought that the 1983 BBC version was the best, although I still had some problems with it. Once I was able to get a copy of the 1973 version, however, I had no doubt that it is the finest. Even if you are only looking for fidelity to the book. The script includes most of the repartee (nearly all, I'd say!) and much of the poetry (one of the things I love about JE is how poetic Charlotte's prose is). And the acting... just makes me one happy 'enthusiast'. :)

I've been working on ways of getting it released too. But until then, there are people here that you can get a copy from. So far there's only the last 4 episodes, because the first one never aired in the US. However, it aired in Canada. So, I'm trying to see what I can do with the TV station here.

If anyone out there has the ability to make a DVD of the 1973 version and mail it to me, could you please send me an email and let me know how much you would charge for this? I would dearly love to view this version of Jane Eyre again!
