Alomar, D-Backs close
Alomar, D-Backs close

PHOENIX -- The Diamondbacks are close to a deal with free agent second baseman Roberto Alomar, according to the Associated Press.
Alomar, a 12-time All-Star, played for the White Sox last season, but Chicago declined to offer him arbitration, making him a free agent. The 17-year veteran made $8 million last year in the final season of a contract he originally sighed with the Indians on Dec. 1, 1998. According to the AP, Alomar was agreeable to take less from the Diamondbacks.
The addition of Alomar would seemingly put second-year infielder Matt Kata into a utility role. The 25-year old had an impressive rookie year, batting .257 with seven homers and 29 RBIs in 78 games.
A 10-time Gold Glove winner, Alomar batted .262 with two homers and 22 RBIs in 73 games for the Mets last season before being dealt to the White Sox, where he hit .253 in 67 games.
The Alomar signing would certainly help the Diamondbacks' offense, which received a boost last month when the club acquired slugging first baseman Richie Sexson in a nine-player deal with the Brewers.
