15th place finish in class at Paul Revere 250
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla., July 2 - Forest Barber and Terry Borcheller's solid top-10 or better finish in the Paul Revere 250 Rolex series race at Daytona International Speedway was destroyed early Friday morning when Borcheller was involved in an accident with 54 laps down in the 70-lap race while battling for ninth place.
Both Borcheller, of Gainesville, Ga., and the other driver involved, Cort Wagner of Los Angeles, escaped serious injury in the violent wreck.
Barber and Borcheller's official order of finish with Bell Motorsports' Kodak EasyShare DORAN JE4 Pontiac in the race, which started at 11:28 p.m. Thursday night, was 15th in the Daytona Prototype class and 31st overall.
Barber, of Fort Worth, started 15th and was happy to escape the opening lap without getting hit, something that has happened to him three different times this year. He drove for an hour and seven minutes before he ran out of fuel while running ninth. He made it back to the pits somehow on lap 33 for fuel, fresh Goodyear tires and for Borcheller to take over.
When Borcheller started his stint the team was in 12th place. He improved three positions in 39 minutes, but while he was dicing with Wagner he was hit in the rear in turn one, sending him into the outside wall in a backwards slide. Wagner's car then made head-on contact with Borcheller's until both finally stopped.
Both cars are DORAN JE4s, so Doran Designs will be busy providing parts in the next few weeks prior to the next race, which is scheduled for Aug. 6-8 at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course in Lexington, Ohio.
